History

Studies of early Southeast Asia focus largely on its ‘classical states’, when rulers and their entourages from Sukhothai and Ayutthaya (Thailand), Angkor (Cambodia), Bagan (Myanmar), Champa and Dai Viet (Vietnam) clashed, conquered, and intermarried one another over an approximately six-century-long quest for legitimacy and political control. Scholarship on Southeast Asia has long held that such transformations were largely a response to outside intervention and external events, or at least that these occurred in interaction with a broader world system in which Southeast Asians played key roles. As research gathered pace on the prehistory of the region over the past five decades or so, it has become increasingly clear that indigenous Southeast Asian cultures grew in sophistication and complexity over the Iron Age in particular. In recent decades, developments in research technologies and therapeutic advances have generated immense public recognition for neuroscience. However, its origins as a field, often linked to partnerships and projects at various brain-focused research centres in the United States during the 1960s, can be traced much further back in time.

In A New Field in Mind Frank Stahnisch documents and analyzes the antecedents of the modern neurosciences as an interdisciplinary field. Although postwar American research centres, such as Francis O. Schmitt's Neuroscience Research Program at MIT, brought the modern field to prominence, Stahnisch reveals the pioneering collaborations in the early brain sciences at centres in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland in the first half of the twentieth century. One of these, Heinrich Obersteiner's institute in Vienna, began its work in the 1880s. Through case studies and collective biographies, Stahnisch investigates the evolving relationships between disciplines - anatomy, neurology, psychiatry, physiology, serology, and neurosurgery - which created new epistemological and social contexts for brain research. He also shows how changing political conditions in Central Europe affected the development of the neurosciences, ultimately leading to the expulsion of many physicians and researchers under the Nazi regime and their migration to North America.

In late April 1885 while writing a series on Ukrainian ethnography for the St Petersburg journal Vestnik Evropy, A.N. Pypin interrupted his work to travel to Ukraine and see the region for himself. His daughter later explained that her father went at the invitation of ‘long time close friends’ and that the trip ‘fulfilled’ a long held ‘wish to see Ukraine’.1

In this article, we present one of the most mythicised episodes in the history of Catalonia, first the cooperation and later the clash between the Catalan Company, led by the intrepid Roger de Flor (also known as Roger von Blume and Rutger Blume), and the Byzantine emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos and his son and co-regent Michael IX. We also discuss their settlement in the duchy of Athens in 1311, which later expanded to the duchy of Neopatria, where the Catalans remained a constant presence for more than 70 years. Special attention is paid to the meagre archaeological remains (especially towers and castles) still surviving from that phenomenal adventure in continental Greece, the negative memory this episode has left in Greek folklore, and the conversion of the Almogavar adventurer into a national myth in both Greece and Catalonia, albeit from diametrically opposed positions.

El estudio comenta los textos donde dichas recetas se insertan, las tecnicas de trabajo que mencionan y concluye con un apendice documental en el que se incluye la traduccion al castellano de las recetas estudiadas. EnglishThis work is dedicated to the analysis of techniques for glazing ceramics that are documented in some treatises and recipe books of medieval times. These are texts from, for the most part, the Italian Peninsula, including recipes dedicated to the glazed ceramic with lead and tin, with particular reference to the making of the so-called, golden ceramic. The study discusses the texts in which these recipes are inserted, the techniques of work mentioned and it concludes with an appendix which includes the translation into Castilian language of the prescriptions studied.

The fall of the Muslim civilization resulted from the rejection of reason. The rejection of reason was a result of the characterization of the use of reason to know revelation as kufr. The rejection of reason became explicit in the shutting of the gates to ijtihad and was reinforced by al-Ghazali’s attack on philosophers. The rejection of reason found political expression in the repression of the rationalists by Musa al-Hadi in 786. The slaughter of five-thousand philosophers was an event analogous to the Reign of Terror of the Jacobins, under Maximilien Robespierre during the French Revolution. Sixteen thousand followers of “tradition” were beheaded at the guillotine with the emergence of the Age of Reason, touted by the European Enlightenment, a millennium afterwards. In Islam, the rejection of reason made it harder to understand and follow revelation. The perception that “all knowledge is in the Quran” did not help matters. This was an example of perfunctory thought. For it automatically withheld the designation of “knowledge” from all knowledge not in the Quran. This perception was based on a problematic understanding of epistemology or what constitutes knowledge. It was a reflection of hubris. In response to the bewilderment caused the prohibition of the use of reason, exegetes alleged that revelation features “ambiguous” passages. The rejection of reason made it hard to know and follow revelation. It also made it hard to understand key terms as “mutashabihat,” “hikma,” and “hawa.” As a result, Muslims turned to tradition, which replaced reason for the purpose of explaining revelation. But to “explain” revelation, tradition had to be elevated to an “equal” of revelation and subsequently even “above” revelation.
For the expectation that it would “explain” revelation placed tradition in the position of a “judge” of revelation. The elevation of tradition above revelation reversed the relation of revelation and tradition. The word of God was subordinated to the words of persons. The reversal of the relationship between revelation and tradition facilitated the adoption of the teaching of abrogation. The abrogation of the peace verses by the ayah as-sayf transformed Islam into “political Islam.” The abrogation of revelation by tradition transformed Islam into “traditional Islam.” The application of the teaching of abrogation warped penal law. The abrogation of revelation by tradition subjugated revelation to tradition. Hence, the process that led to this requires attention. It is necessary to restore revelation to its pre-eminence in relation to tradition, to rehabilitate reason, and to ensure that all laws are in agreement with revelation rather than based on inclination. Remettant en question l’existence même du punctum, d’une vérité intrinsèque de l’image, nous proposons avec Merleau-Ponty de cesser de considérer l’image cinématographique comme une « seconde chose » pour en faire valoir la rencontre, seule capable de nous en faire comprendre la réalité. Nous rappelons alors la figure de « précession réciproque » évoquée par Merleau-Ponty dans L’Œil et l’esprit, qu’il identifie à la « vision même », pour montrer combien elle peut nous aider à saisir les potentialités de l’image cinématographique déjà entrevues par Eisenstein qui voyait en elle un phénomène de « momification dynamique ».

ABSTRACT: The article presents results of a research specifically related to the choral activities a capella developed and/or sponsored by the Sociedade de Cultura Artística Brasílio Itiberê (SCABI), in Curitiba, Parana, Brazil. The Jewish and Christian inhabitants of twelfth-century Rome viewed the urban landscape of their city through the lens of its ancient past. Their perception of Rome was shaped by a highly localized topography of cultural memory that was both shared and contested by Jews and Christians. Our reconstruction of this distinctively Roman perspective emerges from a careful juxtaposition of the report of Benjamin of Tudela’s visit to Rome preserved in his Itinerary and various Christian liturgical and topographical texts, especially those produced by the canons of the Lateran basilica. These sources demonstrate that long-standing local claims regarding the presence in Rome of ancient artifacts from the Jerusalem Temple and their subsequent conservation in the Lateran acquired particular potency in the twelfth century. This Article documents how and why the sixteenth-century Lutheran Reformation helped to build the modern public education system of the West. Rejecting the medieval tradition of church education primarily for and by the clergy, Martin Luther argued that all Christians need to be educated to be able to read the Bible on their own, to participate fully in the life of the church, state, and society, and to prepare for their distinct vocations. Lutheran Germany and Scandinavia thus set up public schools as "civic seminaries," in Philip Melanchthon's apt phrase, designed to offer general spiritual and civic education for all. In early modern Lutheran lands, the state replaced the church as the chief educator of the community, and free basic education with standard curricula was made compulsory for all children, boys and girls alike. The Article offers case studies of new German city and territorial laws on education on the books and in action, and it reflects on the enduring significance of this early experiment in education even in our day.

This critical essay describes and demonstrates the uses and unique contributions of performative writing as a form of inquiry into the materialities and mobilities of sociocultural communicative phenom- ena. Embracing an Anzaldu an approach, the author utilizes Mesoamerican Aztec and Chicanx history, iconography, and mythos to argue for an ontological reimaging of where research should begin and end. As a methodological intervention, this article chal- lenges traditional impulses regarding where knowledge generation occurs, which knowledges are valid, and who counts as a valuable knowledge producer. By shifting genres, breaking grammatical rules, and creatively constructing poetics and rhythm (flor y canto), this “flight of the imagination” focuses on what Chicana, Latina, and indi- genous scholars have termed “fleshing the spirit” or “spiriting the flesh.” By embracing the soul work and spirituality of writing, this piece offers an art-based approach to methodological inquiry that functions as a sharp critique of the White capitalist cisheteropatriar- chal structure of higher education that maintains status quo under- standings of knowledge. When rerouting our methodological impulses toward a critical and decolonial telos and embracing the soul and spirit of performative writing, I argue that our first move must be to make an ontological shift in how we see the world and our place in it—we must begin and end with “theories in the flesh.”

In the fall of 2009, the authors conducted a limited
ground-penetrating radar survey in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin
on the remains of the First Fort Crawford (47CR249). First Fort Crawford was built in 1816 and abandoned in 1832. In the 1930s, the fort was accidentally rediscovered. At that time, Leland R. Cooper of Hamline University excavated a majority of the fort’s rooms as a Works Progress Administration project. Largely undocumented, these excavations have left us without an accurate idea of the extent of the excavations and, more to the point, what was not excavated. Sketchy surviving records suggest that the powder magazine and latrines were either not located or not excavated at the time. Comparing forts with similar architecture offered clues as to where to look for those features. Cooper’s accession books and photographs allowed us to reconstruct much of the excavation and its features. Geophysical Survey Systems SIR-3000 ground-penetrating radar was used in an attempt to relocate these features for future excavation and to determine the extent of previous excavations. The results of these investigations indicate that there are intact rooms and features that were not previously excavated.

The practice of taxing church property while exempting other nonprofit groups appears to violate the “no special burden” principle of the free exercise clause. The Supreme Court case of Walz v. Commission charted a course between the free exercise and establishment clause. The Court argued from neutrality, separatism, and history to state that tax exemption of church property is part of an unbroken national tradition. However, the Court’s neutrality argument does not address constitutionality, its separatism argument is contrived, and historically, only established religions have been exempt from taxation.

Past tax exemptions are rooted in two traditions: the common law adopted from England that granted exemptions to established churches, and the equity law tradition that granted exemptions to all churches. The common law tradition was restricted to certain types of church property of established churches, and the exemptions could be put on hold during times of emergency. The equity tradition gave churches another chance; ecclesiastical and charitable organizations could be tax exempt.

These traditions continued uninterrupted in the early American republic. Three provisions ultimately provided ground for a challenge to the tax exemption of church property. The disestablishment of religion undercut the authority of officials to prefer one religion over the other. The truncation of the equity tradition removed the equitable privileges given to charities. Finally, equal and uniform taxation was considered a basis of American life.

In modern theory, churches are seen as beneficial to society because they promote public morality, charity, and education. The law of equity is now based in statutory schemes or state constitutions, but the religious use of property is key to its tax exempt status. In the future, courts must find a via media between the eradication of exemptions and blanket endorsements.

Germanicus and his large family (his wife Agrippina Major and nine children) embodied in Tiberius' Rome a new political model that looked beyond the boundaries of tradition and opened up to elements that had remained outside the scene of power until then. They bore the blood of the Julii and the Claudii, and this was an omen of a synthesis, which in the second part of the dynasty extended to include the partial but significant revival of the legacy of Mark Antony and some of his political choices. This book is the result of the International Conference held in the winter of 2019 in Perugia and it analyzes how a great figure, who did not succeed in fully consecrating himself, not only marked a significant part of the reign of the first successor of Augustus, but also the subsequent internal games of the first dynasty for the succession to power, whose results, certainly not by chance, saw the affirmation of his son, and then his brother and of his nephew.

Portavano il sangue dei Giulii e quello dei Claudii, e ciò era il presagio di una sintesi, che nella seconda parte della dinastia si estese fino a coinvolgere anche la parziale ma rilevante ripresa dell' eredità di Marco Antonio e di alcune linee della sua politica. Il volume, frutto del Convegno internazionale tenuto nell' inverno del 2019 a Perugia analizza in particolare come la figura di un grande personaggio, che non riuscì a consacrarsi appieno, improntò tuttavia di sé non solo una parte rilevante del regno del primo successore di Augusto, ma anche le successive partite interne alla prima dinastia per la successione al potere i cui esiti, non certo per un caso, videro l' affermazione consecutivamente del figlio, e poi del fratello e del nipote di Germanico.
