This paper explores intra-individual variation as a manifestation of language-internal multilingualism in the Central-Bavarian Austrian context. Based on speech data from children and adults in different contexts, we discuss different methods of measuring and analyzing inter-situational variation along the dialect and standard language spectrum. By contrasting measures of dialectality, on the one hand, and proportions of turns in dialect, standard language or intermediate/mixed forms on the other, we gain complementary insights not only into the individual dialect-standard repertoires but also into the consequences of different methodological choices. The results indicate that intra-individual variation is ubiquitous in adults and children and that individual repertoires need to be taken into account from the beginning of the language acquisition process. We suggest that while intra-individual variation can be attested through the use of various methods, the revealed level of granul...

The Atlas zur deutschen Alltagssprache (AdA) (‘Atlas of colloquial German’) documents the geographical variation in colloquial speech in the German-speaking area. In this contribution, we analyse the variation in Austria quantitatively using factor analysis. The results suggest that there are three major overlapping linguistic regions of colloquial German in Austria which vaguely correspond to traditional dialect regions but rather constitute separate entities.

Lublin Studies in Modern Languages and Literature
Although dialect use has declined massively over the past 100 years in large parts of the German-speaking countries, there is still a considerable areal diversity overall. Even the written standard language is characterised by diatopic heterogeneity on various levels – pronunciation, lexis, grammar, pragmatics. This is even more true for spoken everyday language, which, depending on the country and area, may be more dialectal, regiolectal, or near-standard in the German-speaking countries. This paper focuses on lexical variation and presents data from the Atlas zur deutschen Alltagssprache (AdA) from online surveys conducted over the last 17 years; some of these data is compared with older data from the Wortatlas der deutschen Umgangssprachen (WDU) collected in the 1970s. The approx. 600 maps of the AdA produced so far document, on the one hand, a surprisingly clear preservation of older regional contrasts in the distribution of diatopic variants, as already known from earlier diale...

In this paper, we explore the geolinguistic relationship between urban and rural areas through the conceptualisation and modeling of spatial topologies. Geolinguistic topologies concern the structure of the mutual linguistic relationship between localities. They can be defined either deductively or on the basis of empirical data and represent the linguistic similarities or distances between localities. We operationalise and apply several such topological models to Austrian data from the Atlas zur deutschen Alltagssprache (AdA), a linguistic atlas documenting colloquial German using crowd-sourcing methods. The results are evaluated on the basis of statistical examination and of visualisations of the topological relationships predicted by the models. It is confirmed that linguistic similarity is determined both by geographical distance and by the distribution of population, but the exact relationship is complex: Not only do smaller geographic distances on the one hand and higher popul...

The results are evaluated on the basis of statistical examination and of visualisations of the topological relationships predicted by the models. It is confirmed that linguistic similarity is determined both by geographical distance and by the distribution of population, but the exact relationship is complex: Not only do smaller geographic distances on the one hand and higher population numbers on the other hand bring about increased linguistic similarity; the relevance of these two factors for linguistic similarity varies with population size, too, such that linguistic relationships between cities are determined more by their size and less by their distance, while for smaller locations the opposite is true. Hence, no single topological model can be identified as superior; instead, the individual models emphasise different aspects of the linguistic relationship between urban and regional language usage.

Lexical variation counts to-date as one of the largely neglected system levels of modern variationist linguistic research on German. In particular, vertical-social variation on the dialect/standard axis have only sparingly been investigated in previous lexical studies and projects, something that is rather surprising given that investigations on lexical phenomena ('special words') have been a prominent focus in traditional dialectology and also count as one of the most interesting system levels from the speakers' perspective. In this paper we present an investigation on lexical phenomena conducted by means of a nationwide questionnaire, taking into account intra-individual variation. The main aim of the questionnaire survey was to collect data on the lexical variation of the German language in Austria, which firstly enables statements to be made about the areal-horizontal and vertical-social dimension of lexical variation.

Person Plural.
Zur Rekonstruktion historischer Mündlichkeit. Klisen in frühneuhochdeutschen Hexenverhörprotokollen

The aim of this paper is to analyse concepts of language varieties in secondary and tertiary education in Austria. The questions put forward are (a) what speakers’ notions of varieties such as dialect and standard are at schools and universities, (b) how they evaluate them and (c) what normative expectations they have for their use in educational contexts. To answer these questions, semi-structured interviews were subjected to a content analysis. The results show that there are some similar variety concepts at school and university. At the same time, however, ambiguities and contradictions between the two areas as well as within them are disclosed. This reflects the complex diaglossic and partly also diglossic situation in Austria, where dialect and standard are equally present in everyday life and individual varieties are evaluated and used differently depending on the region, situation and probably also on an individual basis.

If one looks for linguistic information on the past subjunctive (Konjunktiv II) in Salzburg, there is not much to obtain. A few studies have commented on its morphology in dialect (Mauser 1998 und 2021a), the atlases of colloquial German (Eichhoff 1977–2000; Elspaß/Möller 2003–) provide some general insights as to the use of analytical forms, other studies aim at a broader scope on Bavarian dialects (e. g. Wiesinger 1989; Donhauser 1992). This article gives a first more detailed account. We present findings from a traditional dialectological investigation (relying on on-site interviews using a questionnaire) as well as a variationist analysis of online questionnaire data on colloquial Salzburg varieties. The dialectological analysis focuses on language-internal factors such as analytic vs. synthetic construction and variation of endings but also shows strong differences between the northern Flachgau, which surrounds the capital of Salzburg, and the remote and more rural southern Lun...

This paper empirically investigates the syntactic phenomenon of periphrastic progressive constructions in three Austrian provinces in the Central Bavarian dialect region, with a focus on am-progressives and beim-progressives (Alex ist am/beim Feiern. ‘Alex is celebrating.’). Data on language production and attitudes regarding the areal-horizontal and the social-vertical dimension were collected via an online questionnaire. Data analysis yields a complex picture, indicating that both periphrases are produced only marginally by survey informants. However, on average, informants attribute stimuli with am- and beim-progressives rather to Austria than Germany. Whereas the beim-variant seems to constitute a dialect feature, the am-progressive is not clearly attributed vertically, so that it seemingly applies to the entire vertical axis. Our findings furthermore provide evidence for interindividual variation regarding both production as well as evaluation.

The primary goal of this paper is to investigate areal-horizontal as well as the social-vertical (morpho-)syntactic variation of subjunctive II in urban and rural areas in Austria. The data come from two different corpora that consist of spoken data gathered in two different projects on German in Austria, collected using the method of Language Production Experiments. The high degree of comparability of our data between the two studies highlights the success and reliability of this elicitation method. Beyond this methodological insight, the study has found a global tendency towards a decline of synthetic subjunctive II constructions, whereas periphrastic constructions show an increase, both in more dialect and more standard oriented registers. Our findings further suggest that the city of Vienna exerts a minor influence on neighboring locations regarding the use of subjunctive II forms. At the same time, our data provide evidence for a more decisive influence of the dialect region.

Based on the key hypothesis, that there are heterogeneous conceptualizations of “standardness” within the German speaking countries, this paper both methodologically and empirically tangles main aspects on “standard in Austria” from the perspective of perceptual variationist linguistics. Two series of comprehensive listener judgment tests based on 536 informants, considering different sociolinguistic parameters and assumptions on model speakers, indicate shiftings away from competing (country-specific) conceptualizations towards heterogeneous dimensions of “standard in Austria” with complex evaluative patterns.

In the light of different proposals of a phonologically based periodization of German, this article proposes – in analogy to areal linguistics – the introduction of »transition zones« for the history of German, in order to account for the »double-faced« issue of continuity (i.e., gradual transition) and discontinuity (i.e., »sharp boundaries«) in the description of linguistic phenomena. The case of Early New High German is used for explication of the proposal.

This article presents computer supported “language production experiments” (LPEs) as a method for the investigation of syntactic variation. It describes the setup for the investigation of numerous syntactic phenomena and provides a sample study of the German GET passive across Austria. It also suggests that LPEs offer possibilities for the targeted investigation of linguistic variation in various ways. They may be used to explore speakers’ individual linguistic repertoires and an according corpus setup can be used to examine e.g., interspeaker patterns of variation. LPEs also enable researchers to investigate which linguistic factors control or influence syntactic variation.

In dialectology, there are two competing conceptualizations of linguistic space: one based upon dialect areas / regions and the other on the idea of a dialect continuum. To date these two have been neither theoretically nor methodologically unified. In this article an attempt is made to furnish a theoretical basis from which both concepts can be derived, and a compatible method for the evaluation and interpretation of empirical data is introduced. GAETANO BERRUTO'S suggestion that varieties be seen as concentrations of co-occurrent variants serves as a starting point; when applied to linguistic geography this implies that diatopic varieties can be conceived of as regions of concentration within a geolinguistic continuum. As such, they are fuzzy and can overlap one another. A prototype-theoretical dimension is added to the model, allowing varieties to be understood as abstract dialect types that are manifested to varying degrees in concrete individual dialects. To operationalize this concept, factor analysis, a statistical technique for dimensionality reduction is employed as a category-building instrument in linguistic geography; its mode of operation is eminently suited to identifying and quantifying regions of concentration, i. e., plausible structures within a geolinguistic corpus. At the same time, linguistic co-occurrences are employed to identify systematic relations between variants. Applying the method to lexical data from the Sprachatlas von Bayerisch-Schwaben reveals the usefulness of the procedure, not just for the categorization of linguistic space, but also in the search for previously unidentified spatial structures.

As compared to the English, for instance, the Germans have been characterized as a remarkably normative and conservative language community (Durrell 1999). Discourses on language norms tend to gain a wide audience in Germany. The public outcries which followed the spelling reforms in the past (or just the attempts to reform the orthography) are just one prominent example (cf. Johnson 2007). In the long run, most people in Germany have always yielded to new spelling reforms imposed by the authorities in the educational sector. Orthography, however, is the only linguistic area in Germany in which codified norms were passed by political (and democratically elected) bodies and in which such norms are enforced by authorities, particularly in the educational sector. For pronunciation and grammar, however, definitive and ultimate codices do not exist, although codices from the Duden publishing house (and – to a lesser extent – also from other publishers, e.g. Wahrig 2002) have a quasi-offi...

Historically, German morphology allowed for feminine motion, that is for regular derivation of sex-marked female names via suffixation of male names (e.g. die Lutherin 'Martin Luther's wife', die Falkensteinerin 'Falkensteiner's daughter). This word-formation process was highly productive until the end of the Early New High German Period, but eliminated in written Ger-man for reasons unknown to date. Several explanations have been mentioned, but essential questions remain open. Initially, the paper presents known facts about the structural characteristics of feminine motion and its elimination in Modern German. In the second part, an additional explanation for morphological change is developed proposing that historically feminine motion served to make the socioeconomic role of women (wives and daughters) visible. In the following decades, changes that affect the social, legal, and economic role of women in society have contributed to the extinction of onymic feminine motion because its main functions have become obsolete.

2019, The Pluricentricity Debate: On Austrian German and Other Germanic Standard Varieties
There should no longer be any confusion about the usefulness of pluricentricity and the emptiness of “pluri-areality”, an anti-theoretical term that is synonymous with geographical variation. If we treat the Canadian–US border, the Norwegian–Swedish border or the Luxembourgish–German border one way, we cannot treat the Austrian–German border any other way, unless we have compelling reasons to set it apart from the others. As shown in this book, these special reasons do not exist. Linguists should not postulate conceptual exceptions lightly, because a term that only applies to only one setting (German) is in all likelihood not a very relevant term. [...] In any case, the linguist is not the one to decide what “counts” and what does not, as this role is always reserved for speaker collectives (see section 9.3). It is one thing that “pluri-arealists” consider Austrian differences with German German as “trivial”. They may choose to do so. But it is an entirely different affair to coin and propagate a concept that enforces implicitly cul- tural biases about other varieties. In the following, I offer three fail-safes for standard variety modelling: the application of the “horizontal” version of the uniformitarian principle (see 9.1), the requirement to use falsifiable theories in the study of dialectology (see 9.2) and that speaker attitudes, including linguistic insecurity and power differentials are addressed (9.3). Rounded off by two sections, these principles will be discussed in turn.
