In comparison to the other Bulgarian colonies around the world, that of Istanbul is a special case. If one compares it with those in America, Australia and Canada, it is small in size, but an important part of the complicated Bulgarian-Turkish relationship. What makes it different are the history of its creation, the role it played during the Bulgarian National Revival and the conditions in which it found itself during the years leading to the present day.The Revival is the period when, in the capital of the Ottoman Empire, the Bulgarians consolidated themselves as an ethnic community in the name of the struggle for ecclesiastical independence. With its multiple donors and the support of the Bulgarian State, the Bulgarian Exarchate bought many properties and built Bulgarian spiritual centres on the territory of present-day Turkey—churches, schools, community centres, bookstores, and other representative buildings. According to contemporary Turkish law, the Bulgarian colony, which no...

The paper explores the minimum number of Bulgarians dwelling in Thessaloniki from 1834 throughout 1845. It casts light on their occupations, estates and on the longer and shorter periods of being Thessalonians. It is based on population registers, one of 1834 and the other of 1840, and estate and income registers of 1845 kept at the Ottoman Archives of Istanbul. A copy of the register of 1834 is available at the Historical Archives of Macedonia in Thessaloniki. The analyzed data clearly demonstrate the presence of many Bulgarians in Thessaloniki in the 1834 – 1845 period. By earning their everyday subsistence as merchants, craftsmen or servants they helped the development of the city. Throughout the 1835 – 1845 period the Bulgarian community kept on incorporating new members coming from the Thessaloniki hinterland or from remote settlements and regions. Meanwhile it kept on „excluding“ those of its members who voluntarily quitted the city. Many of the Bulgarians adopted the Thessaloniki dwelling model which did not oblige them to acquire property and rent a room or a house. Others built or bought a house, invested in vineyards, shops and meadows. Only few of them achieved wealth and the right to trade with foreign countries. Despite the persistent instability of the Bulgarian community in the 1834 – 1845 period the perception of Thessaloniki as a migration-friendly settlement with favorable economic environment placed it among the cities that would never be part of Bulgaria, but were deeply involved in its development.

This article presents a comparative study on two levels. The theoretical one is inspired by the concept of " entangled histories " that operates on a supranational level for making cross-cultural tural parallels. The second level presents a case study of the reception of the French novel "Les janissaires" by Alphonse Royer in five languages – Greek, Romanian, Bulgarian, Karamanli, and Armenian, which took place in the Ottoman context from the 1840s to the 1870s. The goal of the study is to illustrate how under the same political reign the cultural transfer enabled a circulation of notions and an appropriation of new civilizational practices between different communities that later incorporated those notions in their nationalist discourses.
MAIN FACTORS FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT AND DISTRIBUTION OF GREEK SCHOOLS IN NORTHERN BLACK SEA VILLAGES IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY TO THE 20S OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY The studies analyze two main groups of factors - internal and external, which greatly contribute to the initial discovery and spread of Greek schools in the study area in the second half of the 19th to the 20s of the 20th century. Their various manifestations and the ways of their penetration into the lives of the local Christian population. On the basis of investigated internal and external factors, the connection ,,greek ethnic - religious - orthodox church - settlement - living - school“ in the studied black sea area is determined.
The first part of this study presents briefly the most important episodes of Frederick Millingen’s (Osman bey’s) biography in the broader context of his family history. Examined here are his various role-transformations and the manifold twists of his personal, national, religious and political self-identification. Attention is paid also to his literary works and political pamphlets, in which he appears as a representative of the 19th century “orientalism” and as a propagator of anti-semitism and right-wing conspiracy thinking. A number of archival documents have been used in the second part of the study, shedding light upon Osman bey’s Balkan connections up to the Russo-Turkish war of 1878 and upon his views on the region’s future after the anticipated downfall of the Ottoman Empire in the years to come. The emphasis here is laid on Osman bey’s Bulgarian acquaintances and on the impact of his writings on Bulgarian reading audiences. The central question asked is how Bulgarian intellectuals and politicians exploited Osman bey’s authority and ideas to promote their own cause – the emerging Bulgarian nationalism. The article follows the development of the church-national movement of the Bulgarians in the Vidin Diocese in the period of its highest activity on the eve of the establishment of the Bulgarian Exarchate. The author presents the main accents of the involvement of local communities in the national initiatives – the participation in the Easter action in the spring of 1860, the resistance to the partial settlement of the dispute with the Patriarchate of 1867 and 1868, the commitment to the initiatives on the proclaiming of the Firman for the establishment of the Exarchate of February 27, 1870. On the basis of various sources, the opposition actions against the two Patriarchal Metropolitans, Paisiy and Antim, were traced. A conclusion is made about the important role of the border diocese for the whole course of the struggle for ecclesiastical and national sovereignty during the Revival period.

The Russo-Turkish War from 1768-1774 is one of many war actions of the two empires in which the Shumla fortress (Shumen) has strategic value and its territory becomes theatre of war actions from 1773 and 1774. And since the great Vizier of the Ottoman Empire is also occupying the city of Shumen, important diplomatic negotiations have taken place, culminating in the signing of the Kyuchuk-Kaynardzhany Peace Treaty of July 21,1774. This book is a kind of continuation of the collection of papers published in 2011 under the title “Valeristica Polyhistorica”. The first volume, “Cumanica”, is devoted entirely to Cumanian issues. Here the central place is occupied by the historiographical work about the study of the Codex Cumanicus, which information is now enriched and updated until the first two decades of the new millennium. The materials of the second volume are grouped around several main thematic topics, like some aspects of the Ottoman-Turkish palaeography and diplomatics, issues of the Balkan Islam, problems of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, and Varia. Hence its designation as “Miscellanea”.

Abstract What Languages Did Enlighteners Speak and Write in? Periodicals in Multilingual Environments: The Case of Shutosh (1873-1874) Residing within the confines of the multi-cultural and multilingual Ottoman Empire Bulgarians spoke and wrote in different languages, depending on the type of communication and the audience. This paper presents several examples of Bulgarian enlighteners from the 19 th century who used a language other than their own native Bulgarian. Shutosh was a comic newspaper, published in Istanbul in the 1870s. It was the Bulgarian version of a periodical owned by the Greek Teodor Kasap. Almost all publications in the newspaper were either anonymous, or signed with pen names. Large parts of them were translations, but neither the names of the authors, nor the translators were mentioned. One such translation was in fact an adaptation of Voltaire's Zadig ou la Destinée. This article traces the history of that newspaper and presents some of its publications that have to do with literature. The observations lead to the conclusion that there was considerable multilingualism among Bulgarians in the mid-19 th century. There were some multilingual periodicals, and there were texts published in languages other than Bulgarian and Greek. After the establishing of the new Bulgarian state (not so much in Eastern Rumelia), the trend changed and the Bulgarian language gained its high status and almost monopoly position, as well as the status of a lieu de mémoirе.
