Among the various types of images, cartoons are often regarded as enduring because they are meant to be spontaneous. They allude to events from a bygone era that may no longer hold significance, effectively placing them in the realm of the past.

Autunno 1943: il casertano subì stragi e fece Resistenza. Molte furono le donne nate o residenti in questa provincia, antica Terra di Lavoro, vittime di eccidi e fucilazioni, molte quelle che aderirono alla lotta di Liberazione, operando anche in altre regioni. Per riscoprirne la memoria sono stati rintracciati i loro nomi attraverso le carte del ministero della Difesa, Ufficio per il servizio riconoscimento qualifiche e per le ricompense ai partigiani, conservate presso l’Archivio centrale dello Stato. E tutte le combattenti vollero veder riconosciuta la loro partecipazione, non accontentandosi della qualifica di “patriota”: una sorta di disobbedienza civile ante litteram, che le vide in massa far “ricorso” e richiedere il grado di “partigiana combattente”. Poi, fu silenzio.

In 1985 startte de gemeente Nederweert met de uitvoering van het uitbreidingsplan Bredeweg/Molenweg. Eén van de infrastructurele aanpassingen in dat kader was het veranderen van de aansluiting van de Molenweg op de Bredeweg. Sommigen zullen zich de locatie nog goed herinneren: op die plek (‘Bi-j Mueën’, fam. Van Loon) stond een prachtige lindenboom met een veldkruis. In het voorjaar van 1985 werden de wegwerkzaamheden uitgevoerd. Het nieuw-uitgegraven wegcunet bood de mogelijkheid om als kijkgaatje te fungeren naar de archeologische ondergrond.

Naast resten van een oude boerderij werd tijdens dat onderzoek ook een aantal sporen uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog gevonden. Die werden slechts voorzichtig onderzocht met het oog op risico’s ten gevolge van mogelijk aanwezige onontplofte munitie. Twee grote kuilen en een greppel vielen op. Die konden worden  mede vanwege hun ‘verse’ verschijningsvorm geïnterpreteerd als resten uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De greppel was het restant van een mitrailleurnest. Het wapen heeft gestaan in het hart van de sikkelvormige greppel en de schutter kon vanuit de greppel manoeuvrerend op die manier een schootveld met een radius van 90 graden bestrijken. De geschutrichting was in noordelijke richting, richting Someren.

Informatie van omwonenden ten tijde van de uitvoering van het onderzoek in 1985 wees uit dat de sporen dateren uit de eerste helft van september 1944. Kort voordat de Engelse bevrijders medio september 1944 vanuit Someren het noorden van de gemeente Nederweert bereikten, liet de Duitse bezetter door Poolse krijgsgevangenen en plaatselijke tewerkgestelden schuttersputten en schuilgaten graven in de akkers die werden omsloten door Bredeweg en Molenweg. De richting van de gevonden geschutsstelling (naar het noorden, dus richting de buurtschappen Boeket en Strateris) is daarmee niet in tegenspraak.

In the last years, climate justice and LULU movements have spanned Italy and beyond. Alongside such huge movements, in Italy "low intensity" micro-conflicts had spread, involving local communities in contrasting unwanted projects. In this article we propose a frame analysis of the protest campaign against the reactivation of a military polygon in Augusta (SR), in Sicily. We a found a process of frame amplification because, when asking to demilitarize the area to establish a natural park, activists also claim for another model of development. We used qualitative methods tools.

Abstract: When the Sephardic population was expelled from Spain in 1492 and Portugal in 1496, the life course and destiny of this people completely changed and adapted to new environments. Seeking refuge in other countries, the Sephardim turned to the Balkan countries and began to settle many Serbian cities, among which were Nis and Pirot. In the mentioned cities, the Spanish Jews formed Jewish communities and despite the hardships of life, between the two world wars, they always invested in the education of their youth and enabled the members of the community to realize themselves in cultural and sports activities. Although their intention was to preserve their ethnic identity, the inevitable assimilation to the Serbian population was increasing since the Jewish youth entered the Serbian education system and thereby gradually contributed to the gradual loss of their language and its maintenance, exclusively, within families. However, many wars, starting with the Serbo-Bulgarian war, through the Balkan wars, the First World War and the Second World War, had an unfavorable eff ect on the Sephardim, which ultimately refl ected in their disappearance, as it were, aft er the Holocaust, when a larger number of Jews died in this terrible event. Namely, at that time, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia had about 70,000 Jews, of whom about 60% were Ashkenazi and 40% Sephardim. Most of them lived in cities and made up about 0.5% of the population. However, anti-semitism was never as strong as in that period, when the internal situation and position of Yugoslavia in the international community strongly and adversely aff ected the position and lives of Spanish Jews in Nis and Pirot. Th erefore, the balanced and stable atmosphere between the Jewish and Serbian population in the mentioned cities was stopped by the Second World War, a merciless event that ended the lives of many Jews in Yugoslavia at the time. At the beginning of the war, diff erent types of bans and harassment were started, which ultimately resulted in the arrest of most Sephardim both in Niš in 1941 and in Pirot in 1943. Arrested and taken to the camp of Crveni krst, the Sephardim from Nis were imprisoned until 1942, but aft er the breach of the aforementioned camp, one group of Jews died, another escaped, while the third group was taken to the “Sajmište” camp, where they perished. A similar fate was experienced by the Sephardic Jews from Pirot who were placed in the camp in Sokolana, where they experienced merciless torture until March 19, 1943, when a certain number of captured Jews from Pirot were taken by train to Poland, the death camp - Treblinka, where they all perished. The article aims to provide a comprehensive description of the legal order of the General Government (1939-1945) and thus systemize the sources of the reconstruction of legal norms used in the processes of applying the law in the studied area. The analysis will be focused on issues related to jurisprudence and extra-legal axiologies to which the law in the General Government was subjected. The article is based on a comprehensive approach to the law of the General Government. It describes the creation of law in the GG (where it came from), the application of the law, and the factors that influenced this process. The presented characteristics provide the basis to describe the synthetic features of the GG's legal order. It also argues that the German authorities deliberately created a politicized, colonial, uncertain, unclear, and racist legal order in the GG. Despite emerging from the sources of European civilization (including the legal one), the Nazi German legal order in the General Government was a contradiction of legalistic principles, guarantees, and values developed over the centuries. Therefore, the term "legal (dis)order" should be considered a proper definition of the described phenomenon. The article uses the research methods appropriate to jurisprudence and to interpreting historical sources.

Elk monument in de openbare ruimte - een standbeeld of gevelsteen - is een knooppunt van verhalen die soms schuren. Elk monument heeft een biografie, een geschiedenis van levensfasen: van oprichten, onthullen, vereren en herdenken tot protesteren en verdedigen. In deze lezing staan de hoofdvraag en de belangrijkste bevindingen van het KNAW-adviesrapport over omstreden monumenten in de openbare ruimte centraal. Verder worden aanbevelingen gepresenteerd. Het rapport heeft zich gericht op twee onderzoeksterreinen: • koloniaal verleden van Nederland, inclusief slavernij; • oorlogen en genociden in de 20 e eeuw waar Nederland bij betrokken is geweest.

In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden zwei Handlungsfelder der Kulturpolitik, in Hinsicht auf
das Verhältnis von der Kirche und den Besatzern betrachtet. In beiden war die
Ausgangssituation von komplett unterschiedlichen Vorstellungen geprägt. Das war bei der
Schulpolitik der Kontrast zwischen dem französischen Willen ein laizistisches, demokratisches
und egalitäres Schulsystem aufzubauen und dem der Kirche sich auf das Modell der
Konfessionsschule, der Zeit vor dem Krieg zurückzubesinnen. Bei der Jugendpolitik resultierte
der Konflikt viel mehr aus dem Gegensatz zwischen den direkten Interessen der Kirche ihre
Jugendverbände zu stärken und den der Besatzungsmacht eine plurale, humanistisch geprägte
und demokratische Landschaft an Jugendbewegungen zu erzeugen. In der Vorstellung der
Kirche galt es auch hier zum Alten zurückzukehren.
Diese Untersuchung trägt eine Gewissheit eindeutig zur Schau. Nämlich, dass eine
Besatzungsmacht in einer de iure Militärdiktatur schnell an die Grenzen ihres Einflusses
kommt, besonders im Bereich der Kulturpolitik. Diese Sachlage wird dadurch verschärft, dass
die Kirche die einzige noch bestehende Institution in der direkten Nachkriegszeit war. Die
Kulturpolitik der französischen Militärregierung kann in Bezug auf die Kirche nicht als
Konfrontationspolitik eingestuft werden, weil solch ein Kurs das unmittelbare Scheitern
jeglicher Initiativen in der Kulturpolitik bedeutet hätte. Die DEP konnte nicht auf die
Kooperation mit der deutschen Bevölkerung und speziell mit der Kirche verzichten, sei es nur
weil es schlicht und einfach nicht genug französisches Personal gab, um die Maßnahmen ohne
deutsche Unterstützung durchzusetzen. Darüber hinaus wäre es unmöglich gewesen eine
Demokratisierungspolitik durchzuführen ohne auf die Menschen vor Ort zurückzugreifen.
Demokratie und Freiheitsliebe lassen sich nicht von oben auf ein anderes Volk aufzwingen.

Aufgrund der alliierten Lufthoheit begann NS-Deutschland gegen Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges begann Deutschland kriegswichtige Fabrikanlagen in den Untergrund zu verlegen. Hierzu wurden bestehende Bergwerke und andere Einrichtungen wie Eisenbahntunnel umgenutzt, aber auch neue, umfangreiche Anlagen in den Berg vorgetrieben, häufig unter Einsatz von Zwangsarbeitern und KZ-Insassen. In Südwestfalen sind einige dieser Beispiele erhalten. Berichtet wird hier von der umfangreichen Anlage Schwalbe I bei Hemer im Hönnetal (Märkischer Kreis), das bisher noch nicht archäologisch dokumentiert wurde. Hier sollten synthetische Treibstoffe produziert werden, doch der schnelle Vormarsch der West-Alliierten ab März 1945 führte zum Abbruch der Arbeiten von einem Tag auf den anderen, wie sich in der Anlage selbst heute noch gut nachvollziehen lässt.

Due to Allied air supremacy, Nazi Germany began to move war-essential factories underground towards the end of the Second World War. For this purpose, existing mines and other facilities such as railway tunnels were converted, but also new, extensive facilities were driven into mountains, often using forced labourers and concentration camp inmates. Some of these examples have been preserved in South Westphalia. Reported here is the extensive Schwalbe I plant near Hemer in the Hönnetal (Märkischer distr.), which has not yet been archaeologically documented. Synthetic fuels were to be produced here, but the rapid advance of the Western Allies from March 1945 onwards led to the abandonment of the work from one day to the next, as can still be easily traced in the plant itself today.

Kurzer Bericht zu dem Zusatztank eines deutschen Jagdflugzeugs aus dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, der zufällig bei Reinigungsarbeiten in einem südwestfälischen Stausee gefunden wurde. Er ist heute - zusammen mit archäologischen Untersuchungen an einem Siegerländer Feldflughafen aus der Zeit - Beleg für die Luftkämpfe am Ende des Krieges in diesem Raum. Zusatztanks wie dieser wurden später auch als Wasserfahrzeug beim Spielen eingesetzt und zu friedlichen Zwecken umgenutzt.

Short report on the auxiliary tank of a German fighter plane from the Second World War, which was found by chance during cleaning work in a reservoir in southern Westphalia. Today it is - together with archaeological investigations at a Siegerland airfield from the time - evidence of the air battles at the end of the war in this area. Auxiliary tanks like this one were later also used as watercraft in games and repurposed for peaceful purposes.

Bei Kirchhunden in Südwestfalen (Kr. Olpe) wurden bei Bauarbeiten zufällig  drei größere Bleche der NSDAP gefunden, die der "Volkserziehung" dienten. Unter den Blechen kam auch eine Hitler-Büste zu Tage - die leider vor ihrer Sicherung zusammen mit einem der Bleche vor einer Dokumentation geklaut wurden. War ein Neonazi der Täter?

Near Kirchhunden in South Westphalia (Olpe district), three large NSDAP metal sheets were found by chance during construction work, which were used for "people's education". Among the metal sheets a bust of Hitler came to light - which unfortunately was stolen together with one of the metal sheets before they could be secured. Was a neo-Nazi the perpetrator?

The story of Apollonius, King of Tyre, produced in Greek Antiquity and anonymously transmitted, enjoyed immense popularity in the history of European literature, throughout the Middle Ages and long into the early modern period. In 1904 German scholar Richard Peters even called it the "Lieblingsroman des Mittelalters" ("the favourite novel of the Middle Ages", Peters 1904). The Latin narrative, which is the earliest written evidence, was translated, adapted, and rewritten in many vernaculars all over Europe during several centuries: from Spain to Iceland, from France to Hungary and Poland. In addition, it has left traces in numerous medieval and early modern texts of different genres, in the form of allusions and intertextual references as well as inspiration for new texts (Archibald 1984). One of the most famous works inspired by Apollonius is undoubtedly William Shakespeare's drama Pericles, Prince of Tyre (1609). This contribution investigates the success of the story and discusses patterns of its "reframing" (Speth 2020) in different vernacular editions of Apollonius, with a focus on the Scandinavian versions.

Dit boek gaat over een familie de Jager, waarvan de oudere generaties leefden in Voorthuizen. De oudst-bekende voorvader is Elbert Henricksen, wiens zoon Evert in 1700 in Ermelo wordt geboren. Deze Evert en zijn nageslacht vinden we vanaf 1730 terug in Voorthuizen Zijn kleinzoons Evert Teunissen en Jan Teunissen nemen in 1812 de naam de Jager aan.

This study examines the strategies and practices used by artists in Western Ukraine to promote and represent contemporary art during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The focus is on the role of cultural and artistic institutions in shaping the value of art during a time of crisis and change in the hierarchy of these institutions. It uses a variety of sources, including catalogs, gallery brochures, private archives, and current bookstore products, as well as interviews with participants in these processes. We argue that the rise of contemporary art in Western Ukraine is closely linked to the formation of cultural capital in the late 20th century, through the participation of social, political, and bureaucratic capital. The study also looks at the ways in which artists and poets have transitioned from the «sphere of art» to the «sphere of culture» by becoming «stars» and creating their own institutions, such as independent curatorships, artistic environments for cultural dialogue, private galleries, publishing houses, and media formats.

The balance of scientific and political opinion toward "race mixing" shifted in both East and West circa World War II. After defeat in 1945, a shrunken Japan and liberated Korea embraced biopolitical particularism and "pure-blood" nationalism. Meanwhile, the enlarged United States reimagined itself as the standard-bearer of universal values in a nominally color-blind but deeply color-ranked world empire. Had World War II ended differently, so too might the prevailing scientific stance on "race mixing" in the US, Japan, Germany, and Korea. This paper reexamines the science of "race mixing" circa World War II and proposes an anti-racist methodological turn toward a global study of science that not only decenters the West, but also notices and explains variations across time and space without recourse to hierarchy, teleology, elision, or aporia.

Κατά τον Β΄ Πάγκόσμιο πόλεμο ο ελληνικός λαός υπέστη τρομακτικές απώλειες σε έμψυχο δυναμικό και σε υλικό κεφάλαιο. Εξοντώθηκαν μεγάλος αριθμός αμάχων και ακόμη περισσότεροι μάχιμοι άνδρες σε παραγωγική ηλικία. Καταστράφηκαν επίσης σε δύσκολα αντικαταστάσιμο ποσοστό σπίτια με όλο τον δυσαναπλήρωτο εξοπλισμό τους και τους αποθηκευτικούς τους χώρους καθώς και δημόσια κτίρια και άλλες υποδομές. Επιβλήθηκαν επίσης κατασχέσεις τροφίμων σε μεγάλη έκταση. Αυτές οι καταστροφές επιβλήθηκαν σε ένα πληθυσμό ο οποίος ήδη πριν τον πόλεμο επιβίωνε με μεγάλη δυσχέρεια και σε ένα μεγάλο ποσοστό του ήταν πρόσφυγες οι οποίοι δεν είχαν προλάβει να επουλώσουν τις πληγές τους και να επαναφέρουν την κανονικότητα στην ζωή τους Οι επιπτώσεις αυτής της έλλειψης στέγης, που δημιούργησαν οι καταστροφές των στρατευμάτων κατοχής μετά τον πόλεμο, είναι σημαντικές και για τις μεταπολεμικές εξελίξεις. Η μελέτη της επίδρασης των διεθνών δικτύων γνώσης και εξουσίας στον οικιστικό
ιστό, οδήγησε στο συμπέρασμα, ότι με βάση το σχέδιο Μάρσαλ εφαρμόστηκε ένα αμερικανικής έμπνευσης σχέδιο για τις πολιτικές διαμόρφωσης του κτισμένου περιβάλλοντος στη
μεταπολεμική Ελλάδα με επίκεντρο την αυτοστέγαση ως κεντρική πρακτική άσκησης εξουσίας. Πριν την Ελλάδα, είχε εφαρμοστεί παρόμοια πολιτική και στο Πουέρτο Ρίκο και η
Ελλάδα χρησιμοποιήθηκε ως υπόδειγμα για χώρες της Άπω Ανατολής. Η στεγαστική πολιτική που εφαρμόστηκε, στόχευε όχι μόνο στην εξασφάλιση ιδιόκτητης κατοικίας για τους
πολλούς, αλλά ήταν και ένα ιδεολογικό όχημα πολιτισμικής επιρροής και διάχυσης του
αμερικάνικου ονείρου. Στόχος, να ενταχθεί ο ελληνικός λαός μέσα από την βιωματική του
εμπειρία και την πολιτισμική πρακτική του στο κυρίαρχο πολιτικό σύστημα

Resumo O artigo discute a relação entre Justiça do Trabalho, trabalhadores, trabalhadoras e seus sindicatos à luz da produção historiográfica brasileira recente, que utiliza processos judiciais trabalhistas como fonte ou objeto de pesquisa. Defende-se a ideia de que a instituição, nascida em meio ao projeto corporativista varguista, sofreu grandes transformações em confronto com aspirações e ações dos atores sociais, em especial o movimento operário. O tema é desenvolvido a partir da análise da criação dessa justiça especializada e sua acepção na visão de um de seus idealizadores, o jurista e sociólogo Oliveira Viana, em contraste com as constatações levantadas pelas pesquisas históricas atuais a respeito da prática efetiva das leis e direitos ao longo das décadas seguintes no Brasil.

The article presents the concept of a non-site of memory (non lieux de la mémoire) in relation to the materials created as the result of the First Alert of the Polish Scouting Association, the country-wide scouting reconnaissance that took place in 1965. Following Roma Sendyka, the concept of a non-site of memory should be understood as referring to sites directly related to genocide or mass murders that have not received the status of memorial sites. Although they have not been sanctioned by the powers (government, authorities, museums), the memory of them is present in local communities. Vernacular ways of describing non-sites of memory are crucial for their understanding as a concept of historical and anthropological thinking. An important element of the description of non-memorial sites is the way of conceptualising and naming body disposal pits that have not been turned into burial places. The article contains a description of the scouting action and an analysis of how in 1965, 20 years after the war, the scouts described and marked such places. Considerations on the topographically defined notion of a non-place of remembrance are based on the research material of reports prepared by the teams that took part in the action.
