Reverend Francis H. Leslie (1877-1915), a missionary of the American Board (ABCFM), was stationed in Aintab and Urfa at the beginning of the twentieth century. In 1911, he was put in charge of the works, begun by Corinna Shattuck (1848-1910) in Urfa. He was also appointed as an American consular agent for the region for a short time in 1915. During the Armenian uprising in Urfa, it is claimed that he was held hostage by Armenians in the mission premises from September 29 to October 15 to defend themselves. After the suppression of the uprising, he was called to the Government House and interrogated many times, and the government confiscated the money and valuables left under his supervision throughout that time. Fearing for his life in a depressed state, on October 30, 1915, he committed suicide by ingesting poison (carbolic acid, phenol). This study is on the writings and role of Francis H. Uluslararası üne sahip Türk-Amerikalı yazar Alev Lytle Croutier, (Alev Aksoy) tarih ile kurguyu karmaşık bir şekilde bir araya getirme yeteneğine sahiptir. Yazarlık kariyeri 1989’da kurgusal olmayan eseri Harem: Peçenin Ardındaki Dünya’nın yayınlamasıyla başlamıştır. Eserin yirmiden fazle dile çevrilmesi ve ülkede yayınlanması onu Türk kökenli en çok eserleri yayınlanan kadın yazarlardan biri haline getirmiştir. Bu çalışma yabancı ülkede yaşamanın mekânsızlığının ve mekân genişliğinin nasıl çok-kültürlü mekânın konumu haline geldiğini Alev Lytle Croutier’nin eserlerinde incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Ote yandan, Katharine Branning’in seyahat mektuplari ise Lady Mary Wortley Montagu’ya yazilmis olmakla birlikte, ayni zamanda yazar bu mektuplari ailesine, arkadaslarina, okuyucularina ve ayrica Turk halkina da hitap etmektedir. Turkiye’de yaklasik otuz yil geciren Branning, simdiye kadar ulkede nelerin degistigini anlatirken, kisisel deneyimlerini de paylasmaktadir. Osmanli'daki egitim faaliyetlerine 19. yuzyilda baslayan American Board, kendisine hedef kitle olarak gayrimuslimleri secmistir. Osmanlı Devleti’nin Tanzimat Dönemi’yle birlikte iç güvenlik alanında attığı adımlar jandarma ve polis gibi kolluk kuvvetlerinin ortaya çıkmasını sağladı. Zaman içerisinde kolluk kuvvetlerini teşkilatlandırma noktasında gerçekleştirilen reform hareketleri, kolluk eğitimini geliştirme amacını taşıyordu. Bu kapsamda XIX. yüzyılın başlarında Balkan coğrafyasında kurulan Jandarma Mektepleri, ilerleyen dönemlerde Anadolu’nun çeşitli noktalarına yayılarak nitelikli jandarma personeli yetiştirmek için çalışmalar yapmıştır. Jandarma Teşkilatı’nın kuruluşu itibariyle devlet içerisinde düzeni ve asayişi sağlamak gibi üstlendiği bazı görevleri bulunmaktadır. Bu durumda Jandarma Okullarında yetişecek bir personelin kanun hükümlerini sahada tatbik edebilecek nitelikte hukuk bilgisine sahip olması gerekmektedir. Jandarma personeli edindiği hukuk bilgileri ölçüsünde çeşitli mülki, adli ve askeri görevler icra etmiştir. Personelin alacağı hukuk dersleri de bu noktada jandarma eğitiminin önemli bir merhalesini oluşturmaktadır. Jandarma okullarında verilen örgün eğitimin her döneminde hukuk dersleri, eğitim müfredatında kendisine yer bulmuştur. Jandarma eğitiminde bu denli önemli rol oynayan hukuk derslerinin, bu okulların kuruluşundan günümüze kadar geçen süreçte nasıl bir değişim ve gelişim geçirdiğini irdelemek, nitelikli kolluk personeli yetiştirmede hukukun rolünü tarihsel bağlamda değerlendirmek açısından fayda sağlayacaktır. Makalede genel anlamda 1904 yılından günümüze kadar olan evrede jandarma subay ve astsubaylara verilen hukuk eğitiminin içeriği, yayımlanan müfredat programları kapsamında değerlendirilmesi, hukuk alanında okutulan ders kitapları, dönemin şartlarına göre jandarma eğitiminde yaşanan kırılma noktaları incelemeye tâbi tutulmuştur. Kullanılan kaynaklar çoğunlukla hukuk alanındaki ders müfredatlarından seçilmiştir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Jandarma Okullarının kuruluşundan günümüze jandarma subay ve astsubay eğitiminde okutulan hukuk derslerini değerlendirmektir. Makalede tarihsel yöntem kullanılmış; veriler doküman incelemesi yoluyla elde edilmiştir.

Vakif inanisi, Turkiye’nin Siirt sehrinde folklor acisindan dikkate deger bir olgu olarak karsimiza cikmaktadir. Yore halki, vakif arazisi oldugunu bildigi arazilerden yapilan daireleri satin almaz ve kiralamazlar. Siirt’te vakif arazisinde oturdugu icin evin bereketinin kactigini, bas agrisi cektigini, huzursuz oldugunu veya korktugunu soyleyen yuzlerce insan bulmak mumkundur. Bu inanis, Siirtli olmayan ancak uzun sure Siirt’te kalan insanlari da etkisi altina alir. Yorede bircok binanin vakif arazisinde yapildiginin soylenmesi, insanlari ev ve is yeri satin alirken/kiralarken sikintiya sokmaktadir. Vakif arazisindeki bir dairede oturan kisinin kira disinda bir miktar parayi sadaka mahiyetinde dagitmasi tavsiye edilir. Gunumuzde Siirt halki, yeni nesil de dâhil olmak uzere, vakif inanisinin etkisi altinda kalmaya devam etmektedir.

Lasykar Syiah Hudan is part of the Zawiyah Cot Kala College, the oldest in Aceh and Southeast Asia, built in the era of the sixth Sultan Peureulak Muhammad Amin Syah Johan Sovereign,early X century AD. One of the great scholars / teachers is Chik Abdullah Kan'an. Center for training activities in Aramiyah / Bayeun (present-day East Aceh). Monastic repositories, particularly the Athonite ones, have fascinated scholars for centuries. Their efforts generated and continue to bring remarkable results: catalogues, editions of sources, and studies elucidating specific issues, historical periods, and regions. However, linguistic limitations, disciplinary boundaries, methodological constraints, and thematic affinities do not favour an integral approach and endanger a growing compartmentalization of research. Focusing on the collections of Zograf Monastery, we reflect on the methods and strategies for moving beyond chronological and linguistic borders and approaching the monastic landscapes from a holistic perspective. Rather than focusing on the landed assets of the monastery but giving preference instead to examining the human and economic geography of the monastic landscape across space and over time, we choose to view Zograf Monastery’s repositories as a laboratory for thinking about wider synchronic and diachronic possibilities for more integral research and publication strategies.

The purpose of this study is to examine the tuğra form, an important element of Ottoman calligraphy, in terms of its place in Turkish calligraphy, historical development, usage areas, and design features. In this context, it is emphasized that the significance of the tuğra goes beyond its function in official documents, serving as an art piece reflecting the artistic sensibilities of its era. Tughras are typically designed in a curved form consisting of the sere, beyze, tuğ, and hançer parts, including the name of the sultan, his father's name, and the phrase "el muzaffer daima." The composition and ornamentation of this text depend on the skills of the artisans of the era and the opulence of the reign. The earliest curved tughra examples that can be found are seen in documents of the Great Seljuk Empire. Later, the use of tughras continued in the Anatolian Seljuks and the Ottoman Empire. Officially, the use of tughras ended on November 1, 1922, with the abolition of the monarchy. The tughra served as a title in official correspondence in the Ottoman state and represented the sultan's signature and the seal of the state. As such, tughras appeared on official documents such as orders, decrees, land deeds, diplomas, as well as on coins, stamps, registration books, dynastic emblems, flags, and official architectural monuments. Additionally, calligraphy works in the form of tughras were created with verses from the Quran, prayers, the Basmala, hadiths, aphorisms, and personal names. The tughra of Ottoman Sultan Orhan Bey, which included the names of "Orhan and his father Osman," laid the foundation for all Ottoman tughra designs. In this study, the tughra of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, produced in the Istanbul Palace Workshop during the 16th century, which is considered the brightest period of the Ottoman Empire, was examined. This tughra, currently on display at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, was analyzed in terms of its text, calligraphy design, composition features, and illumination patterns. The tughra's design features prominently include the use of gold and navy blue. Illumination patterns feature saz-style dagger leaves, double tahrir-style hatayi designs, stylized carnations, and cloud motifs. Due to these design characteristics, it is believed that the tughra was created in the style of Kara Memi, the chief illuminator of the era.As a result of the research, it was concluded that tughras were not limited to being merely official documents

Zirvede kalmak, oraya çıkmaktan zor mudur? Ortaçağ devlet geleneğinde, her açıdan zirveyi görmüş bir devletin zirvede tutunma çabaları sonuç verecek mi, yoksa zaten yarım asırdır süren kötüye gidiş, gerileme ve akabinde kaçınılmaz bir çöküş ile mi sonuçlanacaktır? Elbette cumhuriyetten beri Türk tarih müfredatını okumuş olan kişiler için yukarıdaki soruları cevaplamak kolaydır. Fakat bilinen tarihin bilinmeyen taraflarında neler yaşanmıştı? Köprülüler neyi amaçlamış ne kadarını başarmıştı? Günümüz tarihçilerinin üzerinde ittifak ettiği ender konulardan olan Köprülüler Devri’nin başarısının arka planında neler yaşanmıştı? Sorulardan anlaşılacağı üzere çalışmanın teması, Köprülü Mehmed Paşa’nın sadaretini takip eden yaklaşık yarım asırda, onların yönetimlerine istihbarî faaliyetlerin etkisinin olup olmadığıdır. Çalışmaya dayanak oluşturan kaynak grubunun başında Osmanlı Arşivi’nden temin edilen resmi evrak ile devrin nabzını tutan Osmanlı kronikleri gelmektedir. Bunlardan istifade edilerek neşredilmiş olan yerli ve yabancı çalışmalardan da yararlanılmıştır.

Son yıllarda Osmanlı tarihinde öne çıkan isimlerle ilgili birçok biyografi kaleme alınmıştır. Bu sayısal artışa mukabil gerekli akademik donanımdan yoksun olunması sebebiyle eserlerin bazılarında ciddi metot ve bilgi hataları mevcuttur. Bu tür eksiklik ve hatalarla malul çalışmalardan biri de Mehmet Yılmaz Akbulut tarafından kaleme alınan "Hekimoğlu Ali Paşa: Paşalar Çağının Şeyhülvüzerası" başlıklı kitaptır. 2022 yılında Timaş Yayınları tarafından yayımlanan eser, kısa sürede üçüncü baskıyı yapmıştır. Söz konusu kitap hakkında şimdiye kadar birkaç tanıtım yazısı da yayımlanmıştır. Bu incelemede ise Akbulut'un kitabı üzerinden biyografi yazımında bürokratik yapı ve işleyişe hâkim olunmasının önemi ve arşiv vesikalarının daha sağlıklı nasıl kullanılabileceği izah edilmiştir. Bu vesileyle gerekli akademik donanım ve doğru metodolojiye sahip olunmadan yazılan biyografilerin ne tür hata ve eksiklikler içerdiği misalleriyle gösterilmiştir.

Summary
The article examines Ottoman inscriptions,
which are kept in the Regional History Museum - Vidin,
Bulgaria. The inscriptions are from buildings that
have not survived to this day. The inscriptions belong to
mosques, fountains and a sultan's tugrah.

The core idea of this paper is to represent the social networks of musicians, which lived in late Ottoman Istanbul. The net- worked society, as a social term, aims to depict communities in ongoing interactions and hence gives prominence to ties and con- nections between members of the society in question. To digital- ly visualize those links, there are innovative devices such as Gephi software. Through various algorithms, the program converts the relational database of musicians and digitally visualizes this data- base in many different forms. The powerful layouts offer com- pelling evidence of the channels of musical knowledge that were transmitted from masters to disciples as well as between musi- cians. Moreover, the visual depiction of musician networks would permit us to interpret the influential, isolated musicians and the interactions between the main and the sub-clusters in the whole network. This paper offers an innovative approach to the musi- cian communities of late Ottoman Istanbul.

This paper discussed the technical challenges faced architect Sinan when building Suleymaniye Mosque in the sixteenth century in the city of Istanbul, the capital of the Ottoman Empire. This research began with the introduction that describes the reasons and justifications for conducting this academic work, explaining the objectives sought by the researcher to achieve. Chapter II discussed the monumental body of the Hagia Sophia and the factors that shaped its construction. Chapter III stands on the nature of the great amount of efforts architect Sinan exerted in building Suleymaniye Mosque, which linked to the name of a great Sultan, Suleiman the Magnificent, who wants construction no less important than any other building in the city of Istanbul. Finally concluded to research results showed the level of architectural qualities of Süleymaniye Mosque.

Istanbul has always been a cultural and commercial hub for centuries due to its historical importance and its geographical and commercial location. İstanbul’s urban texture reflects this diversity, with its functional and design characteristics in the residential morphology. Located on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, Kuzguncuk is one of the neighbourhoods where the diversity of culture and beliefs in Istanbul still exist. Turkish, Jewish, Armenian, and Greek communities have lived together since the 17th century, they have expanded their own culture to the neighbourhood with urban and social institutions. The vernacular house design is one unique issue reflecting the cultural and social values they belong to. It is thus possible that intercultural interaction is reflected in the architectural decisions of the Kuzguncuk houses. Based on the literature, there is insufficient knowledge on both diversities and similarities between the Turkish, Jewish, Armenian and Greek houses in Kuzguncuk and how those plans reflect the cultures to which they belong. The research focuses on four (4) houses built in Kuzguncuk in the 19th century, Turkish, Jewish, Armenian, Greek houses. The methodological approach is based on the syntactic analyses of the houses. The parameters of integration, connectivity, and mean depth are used to analyse the house plans by the Syntax 2D program. In this way, cultural factors affecting the layouts are traced to understand the similarities and diversities between the layouts. The discussion here focuses on the potentials of usage of spatial components within the configuration, and the analysis aims to reveal the differences and the similarities between the spatial arrangement and the area size in the houses. When the results are considered, syntactic analyses demonstrated the indication of the cultural differences in values and beliefs. The plans have a similarity that indicates cultural fusion. The cultural traces observed in the houses are an indication of the tradition trying to exist in architecture, and this is a reflection of cultural interaction.
