Medieval ceramics (Archaeology)

Artefacts from the Early to High Middle Ages were discovered
during the renovation of the 17th-century Vodiškar
farmhouse in the village of Nevlje near Kamnik, Slovenia,
during archaeological excavations conducted there in
2006. Due to previous construction works, archaeological
research of the medieval stratigraphy was mainly limited to
the documentation of the section of the large construction
trench in front of the western house façade. The excavation
of the three medieval layers was only possible in a very
limited area. The medieval finds were dated to the 10th to
13th centuries as indicated by a radiocarbon date and analogies.
The pottery comprises almost exclusively cooking
pots, often decorated with combing over the entire surface,
sometimes in combination with furrowed wavy lines.
The metal finds testify to the presence of riding horses (a
harness pendant, horseshoe nails, a large iron buckle, a presumed
spur buckle). Some objects can be seen as indicators
of high social status: the harness pendant and a fitting with
punched decoration, both made of fire-gilt copper alloy,
and two fragments of glass vessels. The animal remains also
indicate higher social status, with the high proportion of
domestic pigs and a considerable proportion of younger
sheep and goats being particularly noteworthy. This could
be an indication of the forest use rights and dietary preferences
of the upper class. Apparently, there was a manor
in Nevlje at the end of the Early Middle Ages and in the
High Middle Ages, which was undoubtedly connected
with the centre of power at the castle Unter Stein (Mali
grad) in Kamnik.

On the basis of a detailed analysis of the technical structure of the walls and stylistic analysis as well as source
material, the author reconstructs and dates the construction phases of the brick St. John’s Church in Stargard
differently than what has prevailed in the literature on the subject until today. The creation of the three-nave hall
church with a single nave choir she dates to the 2nd quarter of the 14th century, while the next three phases of
the choir reconstruction to the last quarter of the 14th century, the second quarter of the 15th and the end of
the 15th century. She also presents a different interpretation on the reconstruction of the building stages of the
western tower, concluding that originally the tower did not have any extensions.

The focus of the study is Byzantine pottery together with its archaeological context from the excavations of Bilhorod (Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, Odesa Oblast, Ukraine), led by L. D. Dmitrov in 1945, 1947, 1949, 1950, and A. I. Furmanska in 1953, which is kept in the Scientific Repository of the Institute of Archaeology of the NAS of Ukraine. First of all, the authors concentrated on the analysis of the stratigraphic data at the excavation site and the chronology of its cultural layers and building horizons, from which the ceramic material originates. An analysis of the numismatic finds showed the existence of residential buildings in the studied area from the end of the 13th century until about the middle of the 15th century. The latest date is particularly interesting because it was previously thought that the quarter ceased to exist at the beginning of the 15th century.
Then, based on the visually detectable features of the raw materials, there were identified five technological groups of earthenware pottery in the Byzantine imported ceramics from these excavations and their chronological position, area of distribution, and possible localisation of their workshops were specified. The first of them is similar to the Novy Svet (NS) group (fig. 3). It belongs to the heterogenous SCC (Sgraffito with Concentric Circles) stylistic family. The peak of the spread of such pottery in the Northern Black Sea region was between the last third of the 13th — the beginning of the 14th century. Such ceramics were produced in many workshops of the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, but the origin of the NS group has not been clarified yet. The second group of tableware morphologically and stylistically quite varied (fig. 4; 5: 5—9; 6: 1—8, 11; 7; 8: 1—3). It probably originated from the pottery centers that functioned for a long time, at least from the late 13th to the mid-15th century. Some decorative series (SCC, with 8-shaped figures, monograms, thin strips of dark green painting, and others) can be used as chronological indicators for different periods of time between the late 13th to the mid-15th centuries. The results of archaeometrical study are introduced at least for some of the stylistic series that allowed associating its origin, with the ceramic workshops of Constantinople the remains of which were found in the Sirkeci neighborhood in the Eminönü quarter of the Fatih district in Istanbul, Turkey. All the mentioned above was the most interesting because it provided data for clarifying both the chronology of the activity
of these workshops and the different types of its wares in future perspectives. The ceramics of the third (the EIW stylistic family), and the fifth (kitchen glazed ware) groups (fig. 5: 1—4 and 8: 5) had also a precise chronology and so could be used as indicators for dating the archaeological contexts within the second half of the 14th — the beginning of the 15th century and the end of the 13th — the second third of the 14th century respectively. The origin of both groups is yet to be explicated.

Beidha lies within the Petra Archaeological Park. The area of Beidha called Umm-Qussa East contains a complex water system that includes several cisterns including one of the largest open air cisterns in the region. Additionally, a monumental Nabataean Hall is documented.

Op 5 en 7 juli 2021 heeft Ex-Situ Archeologie een archeologische opgraving uitgevoerd op het perceel aan de Langestraat 9 in de historische binnenstad van Huissen, gemeente Lingewaard. Het twee dagen durende veldonderzoek is opgestart als proefsleuvenonderzoek. Tijdens de eerste werkdag werden twee vindplaatsen aangetroffen, die door de bevoegde overheid als behoudenswaardig zijn geclassificeerd. Hierdoor is een doorstart gemaakt naar een archeologische opgraving, die gedurende de tweede en laatste dag van het veldonderzoek is uitgevoerd. In deze rapportage worden de onderzoeksresultaten van zowel het proefsleuvenonderzoek als de opgraving gepresenteerd.

Bij het onderzoek zijn in totaal twee vindplaatsen aangetroffen. Vindplaats 1 bestaat voornamelijk uit meerdere ophogingslagen uit de Late Middeleeuwen. Dit pakket heeft een dikte van circa twee meter en bestaat uit verschillende lagen. In deze lagen werd uitsluitend laat-middeleeuws vondstmateriaal aangetroffen. Opvallend was de afwezigheid van bouwpuin in dit gehele pakket. 



Vindplaats 2 betreft nederzettingsresten uit de 17e -19e eeuw. Tot deze vindplaats worden verschillende fragmenten muurwerk en vloerniveaus gerekend. Deze vindplaats is voornamelijk aan de zuidelijke helft van het onderzoeksgebied aangetroffen.

Las industrias de materiales ceramicos y arquitectonicos emplean diferentes tecnicas de marcado con dos aplicaciones clasicas, para identificacion y decoracion de piezas elaboradas. As a material, glass has been linked with knowledge and skill mastery for at least three millennia, reflecting the use of traditional tools and technologies inherited from the past. The history of glass speaks of know-how, technological transitions, and contaminations among preferences and raw materials. An increase in the awareness of traditional knowledge underlying the tradition of glass manufacturing has recently been observed with the inscription of the art of Venetian glass beads on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, which has been recognized as a repository of knowledge and mastery of skills, reflecting the use of traditional tools and technologies inherited from the past. This paper provides a short but comprehensive survey of the 12th–13th-century burnished pottery. The base of our
research comprises the archaeological material of two sites: the 12th–13th-century settlement part excavated inside
the walls of Buda and the settlement at Orosháza-Bónum. We put much emphasis into finding the origins of the
pottery type in question, including visiting museums in other countries and viewing their collections. We are still
tracing the type’s connections to the Balkans, but may safely state already that all specimens found in Hungary
were imported. The provenance and presence of burnished vessels can be linked to historical events in the last
third of the 12th century, the external relations of the Hungarian Kingdom, and the directions of the trade routes.
We considered it essential to draw attention to the differences in surface treatment, the diversity of forms, and
the appearance of new forms. Finally, we wish to call attention to the decoration of the pottery types appearing
together with burnished ware.

Il presente lavoro si è focalizzato sugli indicatori materiali dei cicli di produzione agricola di età bassomedievale in Italia centro-settentrionale al fine di ottenere una prima sintesi dei dati archeologici ad ora editi. A large amount of everyday life artefacts was found at the site of a late medieval village on the site of Stari Perkovci – Sela in east Croatia. Imported tableware, combined with finds of equestrian equipment, indicate the possible presence of members of an upper social class, in contrast to what was common in the rural environment. The buildings in the part of the village that was investigated does not show any structural differences that could indicate a diverse social stratification. Only the household and personal items suggest the presence of an upper class in an all-peasant environment. Similar finds from other sites of rural complexes juxtaposed with castles or monasteries as places of high status that have been studied point to a topic that has not been addressed in Croatian archaeological research, namely the material evidence of the existence of lower gentry.

The article presents samples of ceramic of the early Iron Age, found on the Khudutepe settlement in the
Jalilabad district. In the course of archaeological excavations and during collecting of surface fi nds the so
called «Palace pottery» of the Urartian state was discovered. «Palace pottery» («Toprakkale wares», «Van
shards», «Bianili ceramics») – a term is used for monochromic ceramic wares (usually red burnished, bright
cherry-coloured with a polished surface, made on a potter's wheel) of the Urartian state. The wares were found
exclusively in fortresses, in small quantities, and belonged to the items, that were probably used, mainly, by
the elite of the Urartian society. «Toprakkale wares» constituted just 5% of the total ceramic items of the Urartian
state. Eight fragments of ceramic vessels of various shapes and purposes represent the materials. They
probably belonged to two bowls, a cup/goblet, two trefoil jugs, two globular vessels. It should be noted, that
ceramics of this kind are found for the fi rst time in the southeastern region of Azerbaijan. Probably, «Bianili
ceramics», revealed at Khudutepe, came here from the Urartian fortress in the territory of modern northwestern
Iran, and it was a prestigious object for the local nobility, as presents and/or off erings and as pottery of one or
another purpose. The fi nds of «Palace pottery» of the Urartian state confi rm the ties of the ancient population
of Azerbaijan with the Middle Eastern "Great Power" of that time.

Im Jahr 2010 wurde bei Bauarbeiten im Areal des Basler Waisenhauses eine kleinere Gruppe von Gräbern entdeckt, die anhand von wenigen Beigaben mit einiger Wahrscheinlichkeit in das zweite Viertel des 5. Jahrhunderts datiert. Mit dem Fund dieser Gräber liegt für die Epoche der Spätantike in Basel erstmals eine Gruppe von Bestattungen vor, die eine zivile rechtsrheinische Siedlungstätigkeit ausserhalb der bekannten Befestigungsanlagen in der ersten Hälfte des 5. Jahrhunderts anzeigt.

Für die kartographische Aufnahme der Töpferei von Nordost-Ungarn im 10.-13. Jahrhundert wurde eine kleinere Arbeitsgruppe im Jahre 2004 gegründet. Mária Wolf bearbeitete dabei das Keramikmaterial des Gespannschaftszentrums von Borsod und ich habe die Keramikfunde dieser Region aus vier Fundstellen mit unterschiedlicher geographischer Natur nach archäologischen Aspekten untersucht. Die petrographischen Analysen wurden von György Szakmány und Veronika Szilágyi (ELTE TTK Lehrstuhl für Petrographie-Geochemie) gemacht. In diesem Beitrag präsentiere ich die archäologische Interpretation der petrographischen Analysen von 32 ausgewählten Proben aus den Siedlungen des 10- 13. Jahrhunderts von Mezőkeresztes, Felsözsolca und Hejőkürt. Vorwiegend entstanden die neuen Ergebnisse anlässlich der Analysen von Grundstoff und Magerung.
