Urban Anthropology

This paper seeks to examine the level of vulnerability in economic activity and livelihood of a rural community in Penyabung sub-district, Mersing, Johor. In this study, the sustainable livelihood framework has been used as a guide. In line with this research framework, the sustainability of community livelihoodis subjected to what extent they are in control of the following assets (capital): physical capital, social capital, financial capital, human capital and natural capital. Otherdeterminants ofthecommunity levels of vulnerability and sustainability include external forces such as environmental  stress, shock and trends  resultingfromhuman action, environmentalchangeandgovernmentpolicy.  The final sectionof this paperdiscussesvarious strategiesundertaken at local andinstitutionslevelinorder to successfullyimprovethe livelihood of the rural community.

La pandemia provocada por el virus COVID-19 hizo patente la centralidad de los espacios íntimos de las ciudades, como los hogares y la noche, para la economía y la sociedad contemporánea.
La explotación de lo íntimo recoge los resultados de una acuciosa investigación etnográfica realizada en la Zona Metropolitana del Valle de México desde los espacios mismos de la intimidad. Los estudios de caso que integran este proyecto colectivo incluyen actores diversos en la emergencia sanitaria, como familias productoras de alimentos en el espacio doméstico, los hogares de enfermeras y comerciantes que no pudieron atender el “quédate en casa”, trabajadores del transporte y trabajadoras sexuales que laboran por plataformas de internet, redes de apoyo para el cuidado de enfermos,  grupos “antivacunas”, así como familias que vivieron la muerte y el duelo en el espacio doméstico.
Los trabajos describen una implosión material y simbólica entre los que conocíamos como espacios públicos y los íntimos, entre los espacios de producción y los de reproducción, entre las actividades de la ciudad de día y la de noche, entre los circuitos de mercado de las mercancías y los circuitos de la reciprocidad.
El estudio encuentra que la memoria, la imaginación, y el conocimiento incorporado juegan un papel central en este capitalismo de la intimidad y los saberes que parece ser parte de un proceso, más largo en el tiempo, de reestructuración de la economía y de la sociedad actual.

El texto que sigue presenta los avances de una propuesta interdisciplinaria de investigación, relacionamiento con el medio y enseñanza aprendizaje, en la localidad de Paso del Cerro (Tacuarembó, Uruguay), planteada desde los ámbitos de la Antropología Social y los Estudios de Desarrollo. La iniciativa, llevada a cabo desde 2020, consiste en la realización de un estudio colaborativo sobre memoria colectiva, identidad, saberes y cultura popular con perspectiva de género y enfoque de desarrollo local. A partir del trabajo conjunto entre un equipo de investigadoras del Centro Universitario del Noreste y la organización local de mujeres "A Puro Coraje", se promueve la coproducción de conocimientos socialmente pertinentes, la elaboración de productos divulgativos adecuados a las demandas y necesidades de las participantes, y el fortalecimiento de capacidades individuales y colectivas dirigidas a la promoción de estrategias

Based on the fact of a partial consideration, often quantitative, negative and curative, of sound issues in urban projects, this article presents the content and the present results of an interdisciplinary ongoing research. Based on a series of workshops (inspired by focus groups), this research trys to establish a shared analysis method of the urban soundscape, so that it is considered qualitative and positively (as a potentialiality) in urban projects. To do this, special attention is paid to tools and final formalisations mobilized by professional fields and disicplines.

This research has the goal to define a scenario of the transformations that have taken place in the metropolitan area of Milan subsequent to those housing policies that, starting from the evaluation of critical issues and potential areas of intervention, propose possible integrations and modifications of the procedures actually adopted. In Italy, the satisfaction of housing needs is part of a complex picture that requires integrated policies and a common action of territorial governance at metropolitan level. In a context where the housing demand is critical, not only in terms of quality, but also quantitatively, it is necessary to adjust the housing policies to the growing social vulnerability of large and different sections of the population. THE SECOND LIFE OF KSAWERY PRUSZYŃSKI: SPANISH RECEPTION OF EN LA ESPAÑA ROJA The article presents the context of the Spanish edition of the Ksawery Pruszyński’s collection of reportages, En la España roja, written during the writer’s trip to Spain as a press correspondent in 1936, in the early months of the civil war. Despite the passage of time, Pruszyński’s observations still hold interest and offer insight to the Spanish reading public. The aim of the article is to examine how the ongoing debates surrounding the Spanish Civil War, intertwined with postmemorial discourses, influence both the publisher’s presentation of the book and its reception by critics. To accomplish this, the paratexts of the Spanish edition of Pruszyński’s work will be discussed.

O artigo tem como objetivo analisar e dar visibilidade a experiência de gestão desenvolvida no Espaço Cultural Alagados, localizado no subúrbio de Salvador-Bahia. Interessa no texto refletir a dimensão comunitária e coletiva desse espaço, seu papel e importância no território onde se insere, bem como a sua forma de atuação e modo de gestão, determinantes para a sua existência e sobrevivência enquanto espaço público e comunitário, que existe há mais de três décadas e se mantém atuante mesmo no contexto de desmonte das políticas públicas de cultura e das instituições responsáveis pelas mesmas no país.

Raised in a culture that differs from their birthplace and heritage, third culture kids are global nomads with a unique experience of the world around them. We spoke to a selection of third culture kids in Hong Kong with mixed heritage in Asia, Oceania and Europe about coming-of-age in a place that outgrows its people.

The meaning of identity of a place is manifested in its genius loci, or rather in the hidden spirit of the place itself. The immanent value of the built environment represents its physical and materic sedimentation, as well as the collective memory testifies to the emotional stratification of the space itself. The spatial component involves not only the sphere of urban form and public spaces, but also the private dimension of domesticity. It is a process of accumulation of the historical memory of a place, through fragments of shared community life as well as of family and domestic identities. En este artículo dejamos constancia de la indudable influencia que, sobre el precio de la vivienda residencial, ha tenido la expansión de la vivienda turística. Tal y como recogen numerosos informes, este encarecimiento deriva de la expansión de las plataformas de alojamiento vacacional, como AirBnB, y de la consecuente reducción de oferta en el mercado inmobiliario tradicional por el denominado proceso de conversión de viviendas residenciales en turísticas. Lo que sin duda ha contribuido a dificultar el acceso a la vivienda de los colectivos más vulnerables, acentuando la crisis habitacional. / Throughout these pages we highlight the unquestionable impact that the expansion of peer-to-peer accommodation has had on housing market prices and rental rates. As numerous research reports have shown, this price increase derives from the growth of home-sharing platforms, such as AirBnB, and the resulting decrease in the supply of housing for local residents, driving up rents and exacerbating the already severe affordability problem in many cities and countries.

This emergence has served to elevate its status from what has been described as the ‘illegal defacement of property’ to that of a legitimate art form
Manchester’s Northern Quarter, a district littered with the economic and architectural fallout of the Industrial Revolution from which the city’s fame arose, offers the gable ends of buildings and brick-lined forgotten alleyways as canvases for street artists to brand with the spray-painted murals responsible for their recent rise in profile. Large-scale works are increasingly being commissioned by developers and global brands keen to procure the disposable income of a young, creative demographic and to attract them to live, work and socialise in the area.
This paper will examine the popular argument that the commercialisation of street art, in tandem with gentrification and the development of a new creative class, is leading the Northern Quarter into the arena of homogeneous global branding and therefore posing a threat to its independent and alternative ethos.

Svrha ovog rada jest prikazati starenje i suočavanje sa smrću stanovništva vareškog kraja u suvremenom kontekstu. Društveno-političke promjene u Bosni i Hercegovini utjecale su i na promjene u ulozi obitelji, a one se vrlo snažno odražavaju na svakodnevicu starijih ljudi. Slaba infrastruktura, slabe mirovine, izoliranost i usamljenost samo su neke poteškoće koje oblikuju iskustvo njihovog starenja. Istraživanje je pokazalo da su potpuno privrženi tradicionalnim oblicima skrbi, tj. da očekuju od svojih potomaka da će se brinuti o njima kada to postane potrebno. No, većina njihovih potomaka živi izvan Vareša, što stvara jaz između njihovih želja i mogućnosti. Obzirom da je smrt završna faza procesa starenja i da ta činjenica utječe na poimanje vlastitog starenja, nastojala sam istražiti i njihova razmišljanja o smrti. O texto traz um diálogo entre o viés dos quadros (Frames) e a pesquisa imagética, para pensar a inserção da imagem nas análises sobre movimentos sociais. Para tanto se analisou o protesto 15M, de defesa da educação pública, ocorrido na cidade de Imperatriz-MA. Teoricamente, se fez um estudo da linhagem dos estudos de quadro, relacionando-os com os estudos visuais, mobilizando autores como Goffman(2013), Snow e Benford(2000), Collier(1973), Samain(2012), Rocha e Eckert(2013) entre outros. Problematizou-se a imagem como informação fundamental nos interações e alinhamentos construídos nos trabalhos de campo, na observação fenômenos sociais e nos processos de mobilização social. Kant introduced the term “anthropology” in the late eighteenth century in reference to the “pragmatic” study of human nature. For Kant, the physiological knowledge of human nature “is not yet pragmatic, but only theoretical knowledge of the world […] It is properly pragmatic only when it incorporates knowledge of Man as a citizen of the world”, and only when it contributes to the “knowledge of the world” (1978, 4 section 120). Hence, “anthropology” was the pragmatic appropriation of Kantian philosophy in the quest for “world cognition” [“Welterkenntuisse”], the knowledge of our world and our place in it. Kant aimed to contribute to the cultivation of “world citizens”, free-thinking agents guided by reason (i.e. “common sense”): “Physiological knowledge of man aims at the investigation of what nature makes of man, whereas pragmatic knowledge aims at what man makes, can, or should make of himself as a freely acting being […]” (Kant 1978, 3 section 119). The study of anthropology was the practical application of Kant’s three major Critiques. The Critique of Pure Reason [1781/1788] that focused on the question of “what can I know”; the Critique of Practical Reason [1788] that morally expanded on “what I ought to know”; and the Critique of Judgement [1790] that concluded upon the question of “what may I hope”. He linked these simple questions to the study of human nature in terms of “what is man” and “what man makes”. By investigating the mystery of human nature, the study of anthropology was thus a protégé of Renaissance thought.
