The military religious orders of the Middle Ages : the Hospitallers, the Templars, the Teutonic knights, and others

The persecution of the Templars, which began in the kingdom of France at the beginning of the 14th century, spread throughout Christendom within a few months with the requisitioning of property and summary trials, replicated at a national level with defamatory accusations and concluded in the respective dioceses often with life prison sentences while fires were lit for renegades who did not want to confirm the confessions extracted with violence of all kinds.
Paris was the epicenter of persecutions, trials, tortures and quite a few anonymous deaths, in prison or at the stake, tanquam Christi martires who await canonical recognition on the basis also of the elements collected here for 22 knights, priests and servants analyzing the scarce news that leaked from the processes and from some old news.

UNA MERA TRANSACCIÓN ECONÓMICA QUE RETRATA A SUS ACTORES Y SU ESTATUS SOCIAL Y QUE INCLUYE LA CLAÚSULA REGNANTE ANODINA: “Regnante S[ancio] rege, filio Imperatoris. in Castella, R[aimundo] in Aragone et in Barchinona, Turpinus in Cascant.” INSTITUYENDO UNA SUERTE DE PRINCIPADO ECLESIÁSTICO PARA NUESTRO DON TURPÍN LOCALIZADO EN CASCANTE: "TURPINUS IN CASCANT".

El territorio correspondiente al norte de la provincia de Córdoba, hoy desestimado por sus difíciles particularidades orográficas, llego a ser una de las zonas más valiosas para Roma. Sus intereses fueron los minerales de Sierra Morena, los cuales eran extraídos y transportados por la vía Corduba – Emerita, la columna vertebral de este territorio. No obstante, el legado de esta actividad ha tenido reflejo en diferentes épocas, siendo el siglo XIX clave para la explotación y puesta en valor de la explotación metalúrgica de la zona, que junto, con la construcción de ferrocarril, consolidó Un sector industrial importante. Todo ello constituyo un vientre metalífero, que hemos podido ver reflejado en las diferentes investigaciones que han posibilitado el conocimiento y conversación de diferentes yacimientos arqueológicos en la zona. En el presente trabajo queremos dar a conocer la importancia del papel de los minerales de esta región en época romana.
Desde la capital de la Bética, Corduba, hasta Sierra Morena, se configura todo un paisaje industrial que tiene su apoyo en el gran número de filones y minas que constituyen la riqueza cordubensis. Desde la Unidad de Patricia y mediante la implementación de técnicas de teledetección, se lleva a cabo una exhaustiva investigación que está permitiendo posicionar en el mapa los asentamientos y explotaciones del territorio. Estos hallazgos, permiten entender desde poblados mineros como es el caso del Cerro de los castillejos y la mina La Loba, enclaves dedicados a la explotación de recursos mineros desde el Calcolítico. Otra de las zonas objeto de interés, es la correspondiente a Belmez, donde se ha podido documentar un horno metalúrgico, piletas de decantación y almacenes de lo que se ha considerado como officina metalúrgica del siglo I d.C.
Todo lo enumerado con anterioridad carece de sentido si no comprendemos cómo estas estructuras y explotaciones se configuran entorno al eje estructurador del territorio, la vía Corduba – Emerita. Tal y como en el siglo XIX se necesitó la construcción del ferrocarril para dar salida a toda la industria del carbón, Roma, necesitó la construcción de una vía eficiente que diera salida a los ricos minerales del Mons Marianus.

Two 12th century manuscripts from the Holy Cross Monastery in Jerusalem bear witness to the intermingled commemorations of Georgians, Christian Arabs, and Franks, following donations made to this religious and cultural centre of the Georgian Church and community. Among these names are those of several members of the Military Orders, and their families. This inquiry will resituate the members of the Military Orders as part of the diverse and fragmented Middle Eastern society. In so doing, this paper aims to contribute to decolonizing and deorientalising the study of the role of both Templars and Hospitallers in the Crusader States.

This chapter analyzes the installation and development of the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem in Portugal. We cite and explain the main royal and pontifical privileges received by the Order between the 12th and 15th centuries, mixing bibliographical sources with documentary sources.

In this article, the author focuses on the analysis of Mieczysław Józefczyk’s book: Kościół i społeczeństwo w Prusach krzyżackich. Teksty źródłowe do dziejów chrześcijaństwa w Pomezanii i Pogezanii (Church and Society in Teutonic Order Prussia. The Textual Sources for the History of Christianity in Pomesania and Pogesania), published by the Warmińskie Wydawnictwo Diecezjalne in Elbląg in 2017. A detailed criticism of the author’s methodology of the book is presented, with the correction of many errors related to the historical geography of medieval Prussia, medieval chronology and philology. The book, in which we find Polish translations of 548 documents, has numer�ous mistakes that distort the picture of the settlement in the area of Pomesania, Pogesania and Warmia. This paper discusses the serviceas soldiers on Lusignan Cyprus and in the Genoese enclve of Famagusta (1374-1464) of Armenians originating from Cilician Armenia, despitethefact trhat they were also among the forces of the Byzantine usurper Isaac Comnenus who resisted the first Latin conquest of the island in 1191.It examines why these Armenians were recruited and the reasons why they eventually ceased to served as soldiers when Cyprus came under the control of Venice in 1474.

Els ordes jerosolimitans de l'Hospital, el Sant Sepulcre i el Temple tingueren una presencia molt primerenca a Catalunya, entre d'altres causes, per la relacio amb els territoris provencals arran del matrimoni de Ramon Berenguer III amb Dolca de Provenca i tambe per la propaganda dels pelegrins catalans que havien visitat els Sants Llocs. Els comtes i la noblesa, principalment, els feren objecte de donacions de terres, drets i bens que motivaren la seva implantacio al Principat, on a la segona meitat del segle XII ja havien constituit les seves respectives xarxes de convents, amb una incidencia especial a la Catalunya Nova. For some thirty years now, scholars have been taking into account the fact that military orders were also religious institutions, whose members were bound to a regular way of life and were the vectors of an original spirituality. However, the internalist approach to these institutions has not really been overcome, in the sense that historians are still trying to identify an identity that would be specific to each order, by looking at the liturgy or the cult of the saints, for example. Nevertheless, little attention has been paid to the fact that this special form of regular life was largely open to society and the lay world. In fact, the military orders offered the faithful frameworks adapted to their spiritual expectations, alongside the secular clergy and the mendicant orders, which in a sense they were anticipating. It was in the towns, a veritable laboratory for “religious polycentrism”, that the brothers developed pious practices and forms of spiritual guidance designed to attract the faithful.
Using examples taken mainly from the south of France and Italy, we will first look at the role played by the commanderies in attracting the faithful through confraternal structures and the spread of testamentary piety. We will then look at the integration of these houses into the “civic religion”, in other words, we will examine the brothers’ ability to promote or maintain devotions that were supported by the municipal authorities and the various components of the civic body. This was achieved in particular through the devotion to saints, the upkeep of places of worship frequented by the population, and participation in major civic celebrations such as processions. Finally, the brothers contributed to the common good in many ways, of which we will limit ourselves to works of charity. Although we will briefly touch on a view militarized brotherhoods aimed at imposing a moral order on some urban societies, we will focus above all on the three great universal orders: the Temple, the Hospital of St. John and, occasionally, the Teutonic Order. The chronology adopted is intended to be broad. In reality, however, it depends on local sources. While certain framing practices are well documented for the 13th-14th centuries, we often have to wait until the end of the Middle Ages to see how the commanderies contributed to the support of civic worship or other local devotions.

Cuando en 2012 iniciamos los trabajos arqueológicos en el castillo de La Estrella de Montiel, pronto descubrimos que nos enfrentábamos a un reto que era tan difícil como apasionante y que el objeto de estudio era algo más que un castillo medieval, pues aparte de la fortaleza que sobre un cerro testigo domina la actual población de Montiel, se encontraba, fosilizada y cubierta por sedimentos, los restos de la villa medieval, una de las poblaciones más importantes de la provincia de Ciudad Real en el medievo, así como un sinfín de elementos patrimoniales en el entorno inmediato del castillo y sin cuyo estudio no se podría entender la evolución histórica de aquél: alquerías, atalayas, canteras, molinos, canalizaciones, ermitas, y finalmente, el famoso campo de batalla de Montiel (1369), tan mitificado como oculto a los ojos de la investigación.
Es por ello por lo que pronto comenzamos a utilizar el apelativo de Conjunto Arqueológico, porque más allá de los vestigios encerrados por el antemuro y lienzos principales del castillo, nos interesaba localizar, rescatar, interpretar y valorizar todo un conjunto de elementos patrimoniales de época medieval que tenían que ver con la fortaleza, tanto en época musulmana como cristiana, recuperando un paisaje histórico excepcional, pero muy poco conocido hasta la fecha.

Questo volume raccoglie i contributi degli studiosi che hanno partecipato alla video conferenza che il Baliato di Santa Maria degli Alemanni-Sicilia ha organizzato il 19 febbraio 2021 sulla propria pagina facebook a causa delle restrizioni dovute alla crisi sanitaria del Covid19, che ha visto un'alta partecipazione in diretta da varie parti d'Europa e del mondo e poi una buona diffusione del video on demand. Inoltre abbiamo voluto arricchirlo di altri contributi utili e preziosi per l'approfondimento della storia e del carisma del nostro antico Ordine Teutonico che proprio in Sicilia ha conosciuto grande fortuna nei secoli passati e che oggi continua a prosperare grazie all'impegno e alla dedizione della sua componente laica e confraternale, i "Familiares" che perpetuano la tradizione teutonica a distanza di 830 anni dal primo insediamento dei cavalieri nell'isola voluto dall'Imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero Enrico VI presso il monastero cistercense della Magione di Palermo nel 1197 che da quel momento prese il nome di Santa Trinità dei Teutonici. L'Ordine Teutonico, ha svolto una grande azione di salvaguardia dei "Loca Santa" assediati dalle forze del sultanato musulmano fino alla 1291 quando cadde Acri dove mori il balivo di Sicilia Enrico di Bolandem e poi propulsiva per la cristianizzazione dell'Europa dell'est. A distanza di otto secoli la natura dell'Ordine è mutata, da militare è diventata religiosa, senza perdere l'iniziale vocazione ospedaliera e ospitaliera, che ancora conserva grazie alle strutture mediche e a quelle ricettive, come l'Ospedale di Friesach in Carinzia, il centro per la riabilitazione e la fisioterapia ambulatoriale di Wildbad il centro termale più antico della Stiria nel mezzo del parco naturale Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen, la casa dell'Ordine a Vienna e la procura generale a Roma. Inoltre vanno ricordate le strutture per la formazione e l'educazione dei giovani come: l'Accademia Specialistica di Pedagogia Sociale delle Suore Teutoniche di Passau in Baviera, il Conservatorio a Opava-Troppau ed il Liceo a Olomouc nella Repubblica Ceca che testimoniano quanta importanza viene data alla cultura e alla cura dell'anima oltre che del corpo, unitamente a queste ci sono poi quelle animate dai Familiari dei Baliati d'Italia, di Germania, di Austria e della Repubblica Ceca. L'Ordine dei Fratelli della Casa di Santa Maria in Gerusalemme è l'unico tra quelli crociati, ed è anche questa la sua unicità, che non è mai stato sciolto e rifondato fin dal 1196 anno della sua fondazione. A differenza dei tentativi falliti effettuati degli altri grandi ordini cavallereschi di stabilire un punto d'appoggio permanente o di dare vita a un vero e proprio stato in Terra Santa, i Teutonici riuscirono, organizzandolo in Baliati e Commende a farlo nell'Europa orientale. La sua presenza ha garantito giustizia ed equilibrio nelle questioni di cui era investito, a cominciare dei rapporti con le popolazioni che passavano sotto la sua tutela. L'esempio più eclatante è quella degli ebrei di Sicilia a cui i cavalieri affidavano la gestione dei loro beni e che protessero dalle angherie dei potenti di allora, e che poi nello stesso anno in cui l'ordine abbandonò l'isola furono cacciati dal regno con il decreto dell'Alhambra, noto anche come editto o decreto di Granada, del 31 marzo 1492 di Ferdinando d'Aragona e Isabella di Castiglia, che poi si appropriarono anche dell'ingente patrimonio che l'Ordine possedeva in Sicilia. Una triste pagina di storia che impoverì l'isola sia dal punto di vista culturale che economico. I cavalieri furono anche grandi costruttori, eressero chiese, monasteri e città in tutta l'Europa centrale, orientale e in Italia. In Sicilia lasciarono tracce evidenti oltre che a Palermo in Santa Maria dei Teutonici la Magione, a Messina con Santa Maria degli Alemanni, ad Agrigento con l'ospedale di San Giovanni, a Prizzi con il Castello della Margana, negli Ipogei della Gurfa ad Alia, a Gela con il Santuario di Santa Maria dell'Alemanna, a Sciacca con la Chiesa di San Gerlando, e con i vari "Hospitalia" che costruirono sulla via Francigena. Tra il 1280 e il 1400 furono fondati nello stato dell'Ordine 60 castelli, 90 città e 1500 villaggi in Europa orientale. This article analyzed the historiographical thesis about the relations between the Polish prince Boleslaw I Brave and the nomadic Pechenegs. According thesis the great role in this process had a Bruno`s of Querfurt bishop in 1008. Based on the evidence of Rus chronicles not taken into account by Polish historics, the author refutes this claim.

The publication under review seeks to examine the phenomenon of the cult of saints in Central Europe in the Middle Ages. The authors were inspired by an observation by André Vauchez, one of the most outstanding experts on the cult of saints in the Middle Ages, that the region was ‘cold’ when it came to creating new cults, for there were considerably fewer individuals elevated to the glory of the altars than in Western Europe. That is why the authors decided to examine in greater detail how this aspect of religious life looked in practice in the ‘younger Europe’, which could make it possible to test the French scholar’s thesis. The idea to present the reception in this region of a universal Christian phenomenon, and — through the cult of saints — of European cultural models, is commendable, especially given the fact that even today the history of the ‘younger Europe’ interests relatively few Western European historians.
