This work intends to analyze the link between politics and secrecy in early modern Venice. Seventeenth-century Europe has seen the birth of periodical press and the beginning of a market of information. Venice was one of the main European centers involved in the dissemination of news during XVI° and XVII° centuries. Secrecy also had a great importance in the ideology of Venetian ruling class. It was an essential premise for the harmony and serenity of the Republic and important as well for the efficiency of policy-making. The Serenissima had also another peculiarity: its form of government involved several hundreds of patricians and bureaucrats, such posing serious threats to the preservation of State secrets. The great awareness of the importance of secrecy among the Venetian patriciate, led to the institution of the Inquisitori di Stato. This magistrature was specifically created to watch over the spread of State secrets and it was also involved in the organization of intelligence and counter-intelligence services. Through the analysis of its activity, that constantly grew during the Seventeenth century, and the study of internal political communication at Palazzo ducale I could understand the structure of the institutions involved in foreign politics and in the management of State secrets. Then I focused my attention on the methods of preservation of both confidential documents and information and finally to the organization of Venetian secret services, paying attention also to the dissemination of news in late Seventeenth-century Venice in both oral and written dimensions. Through the analysis of its activity and the study of internal political communication at Palazzo ducale I could understand the structure of the institutions involved in foreign politics and in the management of State secrets. Then I focused my attention to the methods of preservation of both confidential documents and information and finally to the organization of Venetian secret services.

From the age of Augustus we are witnessing an extraordinary proliferation of theatres and amphitheatres in urban centres of Africa proconsularis. These buildings, whose construction involved a significant financial commitment by local communities, represented a real status symbol and connoted the cities in a scenographic way, becoming a sort of architectural and at the same time ideological link between countryside and town. Theatres and amphitheatres rise to very emblem of the Romanization of these lands and their construction often emphasizes the passage of the city to municipium or to colonia. Contributing to the construction of these monuments, to their decoration or offering performances it was a good opportunity for local notables to show off, stressing at the same time the adhesion of the entire community to the imperial policy. They also provide the testing ground for a variety of technical and architectural solutions: in the smaller monuments is often manifested a tenacious attachment to the local building tradition while in the larger ones is possible to find out a clear reference to purely Roman and urban models. This paper, starting out from the data collected in recent research and a new catalogue of the buildings in the province, aims to show how the visual impact of these monumental complexes significantly conditions the image of the ancient cities of Africa proconsularis.

In the last decade ivory diptychs have continued to stimulate debate among historians, art historians and archaeologists and have been protagonists of many exhibitions. These artefacts represent a very particular production that was affirmed during the Late Antiquity, remaining alive for centuries. The many problems posed by this class of materials are numerous and suggestive. Here a diptych classification is proposed based on the material and functional features.

This work is attended to examine a zooarchaeological sample from the deposits excavated on the NE slope of hill Palatine by the University of Rome La Sapienza since 2001, and particularly from Area II. This faunal sample belongs to a larger assemblage, currently under study by the Author, and spans the Mid-Republic (4th-3rd c, BC) to the middle Ages (12th-13th AD). It relies on a well-defined stratigraphic chronology obtained from pottery and might provide relevant updating on zooarchaeological and biometrical issues concerning the urban scenario of ancient Rome. Frequency and ratio of identified taxa, in particular those of the domestic species mainly exploited for meat, show a framework fitting well into the urban context of Rome and the results from previous researches, revealing though some intriguing variations during the Late Antiquity. Wild taxa appear marginal as well as birds and fishes, but offering interesting results about social and economic issues. Despite being minimal, finally, even evidence of marine and land shells help to outline the variety of animals that reached the ancient Rome.
In Late Antiquity occurred a generalized phenomenon of evident ruralization of the population and of progressive crisis of the urban structures. Given this new situation and keeping in mind the peculiarities of the various regional and local contexts, surviving villas seem to play a peculiar role in relation to the organization of the territory. In the last 20 years there was a fruitful debate which highlighted the differences existing in different regional areas. It has generally been strtessed a remarkable difference between southern and northern Tuscany. In Tuscany in general the Gothic War marks a starting-point of a slow process which eventually brought to the establishment of post-classical territorial structures.

The paper, based on a in-depth research on the domestic façades in Pompeii and Herculaneum, offers a dyachronical analysis of the role played by residential architecture in shaping the image of the Vesuvian cities. Private architecture was an essential element of the cityscape as it interacted with the street and its neighborhood through the façade, whose design and decoration, indeed, was not only drawn to meet the needs of the single building, but it also interplayed with the features and functions of the streetscape and its built enviroment. Both when the design and decoration of residential facades appear as an expression of the owner's power and richness and when the private owners remain in the background, the facade is an element of the wider urban context and it is in a dynamic relation with it. In the text several areas of the vesuvian cities will be taken into consideration, from the central ones, more proned to monumentalisation and commerce, to the secondary and peripheral districts, where there were less restrictions and private owners were given more freedom to make their own lay-out. In particular, the paper will analyse the influence of massive residential construction on streetscapes and how they were affected by the emergence of new dwelling patterns (high-rise buildings, protruding rooms and windows proliferation) in the last decades of the life of the cities.
During Triassic time, in the proto-North Atlantic area, the late Palaeozoic fracture system, inherited from the building of Pangea supercontinent, was reactivated. Rifting and breakup of Pangea, initiated during the early Triassic, continued and intensified at the beginning of the Norian. After few million years later, a massive magmatic event, namely CAMP (Central Atlantic Magmatic Province), occurred in the rifted and inside the cratonic areas, covering more than 10 millions kilometers square, leaving its products on 4 continents: North and South America, southwest Europe and west Africa. The main magmatic event occurred at ca 199-200 Ma near the Triassic-Jurassic boundary (Tr-J) with two minor secondary pulses al ca. 195 Ma and 192 Ma. The time spanned by the main magmatic event is very short, probably less than 1 Ma (ca. 610 Ka based on Milankovitch cyclostratigraphy), and the tight occurrence with one of great extinctions events in the Phanerozoic time and the climatic crisis and biotic turnover demarcating the Tr-J, led to the intriguing hypothesis that CAMP magmatism triggered these global events. At present the CAMP magmatism is represented by tholeiitic dikes, sills and minor amounts of lava flows, deeply eroded and in few places well preserved, being due to the subtropical palaeogeographic position of the basaltic outcrops which led to heavy weathering. Most of the CAMP basalts throughout circum-Atlantic domain have quite homogeneous compositions, with low-Ti (TiO2 <2wt.%) except for high-Ti dyke storms documented in Liberia, French Guyana and northern Brazil, strong Nb-TaPM negative anomaly, enriched in light earth rare elements (LREE) and large ion lithophile elements (LILE) respect to the common normal mid-ocean ridge basalts. The purpose of this work is to describe and correlate 6 CAMP volcanic sequences in three different Morocco regions (three in the Central High Atlas, two in the Middle Atlas and one in the Western Meseta) on the base of a petrographicmineralogic- geochemical-magneto-stratigraphic study in order to highlight similarities between the four basaltic units which made up the lava piles. Phase relationships, their major, minor and trace element compositions will be investigated to constrain crystallization order and conditions (T, P, H2O content and fO2) of basalts while the accurate chemo-magneto-stratigraphic correlation of five lava sequence allow to do new suppositions about feeding system of the Moroccan CAMP basalts. Finally new and accurate 40Ar/39Ar dating on plagioclase and biotite separates from 10 basaltic sample of the Eastern North America (Newark and Culpeper basins) will be presented, discussed and compared to both previous dating of the same province and a overall CAMP ages dataset.

The metric documentation of archaeological sites has achieved an high definement level. Traditional and innovative survey and collection data methods are used in site, urban and terrestrial scale documentation. There is still a lack of standards in cultural heritage survey and representation, and new information technologies applied in data collection and archiving require constant enhancement of data processing and storing.
