Race and Racism

Objectives: The present study examined the measurement invariance of the Symbolic Racism Scale (SRS) and the Modern Sexism Scale (MSS) across racial/ethnic and gender groups. Previous psychometric evaluations of the SRS and MSS scores have not examined the equivalence across racial/ethnic and gender groups or have been otherwise statistically inadequate. Therefore, this study sought to fill this gap. Method: To establish measurement equivalence across racial/ethnic (Black, Latinx, and white) and gender (women and men) groups, we conducted a measurement invariance analysis of the SRS and the MSS in a large, diverse sample (N = 719). Results: We found that the SRS and MSS were invariant across gender, and the SRS was invariant across racial/ethnic groups. However, the MSS was noninvariant across racial/ethnic groups. Partial invariance testing revealed nonequivalent factor loadings between Black and Latinx participants compared to white participants on an item of the MSS that referenced "unwarranted" attention that women receive from the government and media. Conclusions: Researchers should consider reevaluating the item that reads: "Over the past few years, the government and news media have been showing more concern about the treatment of women than is warranted by women's actual experiences." Future research is needed to assess how the item is interpreted by Black and Latinx people so it can be modified for use in these communities. Our findings underscore the importance of assessing the validity of the scores in commonly used scales across diverse groups. Public Significance Statement The Symbolic Racism Scale (SRS) and the Modern Sexism Scale (MSS) are measures used to assess covert prejudice toward Black people and women, respectively. These scales have been used to understand groups' attitudes toward social movements, social issues, and political candidates and have previously been found to predict attitudes toward race-and gender-related policies. However, to compare group scores on psychological measures, researchers must know if the measured construct has the same structure or meaning across groups. We examined this question in the SRS and MSS by assessing the invariance of these measures across diverse gender and racial/ethnic groups. Measurement invariance indicates that the same construct was measured in each group, while noninvariance suggests that there may be measurement error for at least one of the groups we examined. We found that the MSS is noninvariant between racial/ethnic groups; specifically, an item regarding special favors for women may not be a reliable indicator of modern sexist beliefs among Black and Latinx individuals. Our findings highlight the need for more work on how modern sexism manifests within diverse communities.

I believe it is critical to identify a new framework intersecting critical race theory with capitalist realism called racial capitalist realism as part of developing critical race economics. This framework seeks to examine racial capitalism with the premise that because capitalism is so deeply racialized, it is not only difficult to imagine the end of capitalism but the end of white dominance as well. I outline the basic structure of racial capitalist realism, addressing capitalist realism and critical race theory, the racialization of capitalism, and post-racialism.

This paper proposes “making refuge” as a conceptual placeholder and an analytical rubric, a guiding ethos and praxis, for the engaged Buddhist aspiration of responding to the social, political, economic, and planetary crises facing the world. Making refuge is conceived as the work of building the conditions of trust and safety necessary for living and dying well together as co-inhabitants of diverse communities and habitats. The paper will explain the rationale for making refuge by connecting the dharmic understanding of dukkha with feminist conceptualizations of the body and vulnerability. This will chart some theoretical and methodological pathways for engaged Buddhism to further its liberatory aspirations in reciprocity with emergent movements in radical critical theory, contemplative studies, and social and ecological activism. The Itinerant Festival is held by the Tutorial Education Program Connections of Knowledge of the Federal University of Vales do Jequitinhonha and Mucuri (PET-connection of Knowledge / UFVJM) in partnership with employees, associations, agencies and public and private institutions - seeking to meet the demands of rural populations and Maroons, in the Serro / MG city, through educational activities. This work it is an account of descriptive experience, in order to report the experience of undergraduate students of Dentistry Nursing and Biological Sciences courses, at, Federal University of Vales do Jequitinhonha and Mucuri, in the Project Itinerant Festival, using active methodology of teaching learning process. It has benefited about five thousand people directly or indirectly. This project contributes at building mutual understanding between students and community, strengthening the process of citizenship of the involved.

These peer reviewed principles were originally written by Dr Karaitiana Taiuru, to provide a Māori and Te Tiriti perspective on Artificial Intelligence with Health, complimenting the 'Principals section' written by Professor James Maclaurin-Te Whare Wānanga o Ōtākou | The University of Otago, for inclusion into the collaborative and peer reviewed report "Capturing the benefits of AI in the healthcare for Aotearoa New Zealand. A rapid response from the Prime Minister's Chief Science Advisor, Kaitohutohu Pūtaia Matua ki te Pirimia" i. The principles have been modified to be a general set of principles for all AI. Various specialised AI such as languages, legal, education, etc will need to modify these principles to make them applicable to the various AI.

Uma análise da cobertura jornalística sobre as diretrizes do Ministério da Educação do Brasil em relação ao racismo no livro infantil "Caçadas de Pedrinho" de Monteiro Lobato (1882-1948) revela inúmeras críticas da mídia alegando uma suposta "patrulha politicamente correta de esquerda". Essa cobertura midiática também negou ou minimizou o racismo na obra literária e na vida de Lobato. O artigo atual difere da posição dominante na mídia mainstream brasileira ao expor o conteúdo manifestamente racista de várias passagens nos livros de Lobato, a necessidade e justificação do politicamente correto nas sociedades democráticas contemporâneas, e a inadequação da posição predominante da mídia e das recomendações do Ministério da Educação quanto ao uso deste livro nas salas de aula.

This chapter has two main, interconnected goals. On the one hand, I argue that, even though the major forms taken by genealogy throughout the history of philosophy seem to make it impervious to truth, there is an important sense in which genealogy, specifically as conceived of and practiced by Friedrich Nietzsche and Michel Foucault, is a practice of truth. How to make sense of this claim? The first two sections address this question and show that the (Nietzschean and Foucauldian) genealogist aims to produce “new truths” that function as disruptive ethico-political forces destabilizing current modes of thinking and being, and creating the concrete possibility for the emergence of new possibilities for thought and action. The third and final section, on the other hand, builds on these insights to argue that Frantz Fanon’s psychiatric writings, too, can be construed as genealogical practices of truth.

This report results from the UNDP project entitled “Assessment of Local Governance and Its Impact on Cross-border Prevention of Violent Extremism Assessment in Libya” funded by the European Union. It seeks to provide a conceptual framing and an empirical assessment of the drivers and markers of violent extremism in Libya. The ultimate objective is to improve both local governance and the prevention of violent extremism (PVE) in Libya at the local and national levels.
The report draws from open-source research of literature on violent extremism and its drivers, on a decade of research and program experience in Libya, and on field research that the North African Policy Initiative team carried out in 2021.

In the fourth section of "Arbin Word Roots Epic," I documented the intense racism within the Western-centric field of linguistics. How did the Indo-European theory emerge? How did it become the ideological tool of all fascists, whether openly or hidden? How did so-called freedom-loving, liberal, and even leftist historians and linguists easily embrace this bogus theory? How did politics enslave science? And what is the truth? When we compare Turkish with English and Latin, its compatibility (40.5% - 35.7%) is higher than that of German with Latin and French. The compatibility of Turkish with German and French is at least as high as the compatibility among all "Indo-European" languages (30.9-27). Even Arabic, supposedly outside this language family, shows a 9.6% overlap with English and Latin. These percentages are in parallel with mythological and genetic connections.

This issue of History and Memory highlights the ongoing, at times heated, debates regarding the central role that race, racism and migration play in the history, nature and fate of a number of contemporary societies. Indeed, few topics are as volatile today as those related to race, belonging and citizenship. In light of these discussions, the different articles in this issue regarding the history of slavery in the United States, efforts to desegregate the US army, the American Legion's aspirations to shape historical education, and the memory of slavery and migration in the United Kingdom will be of interest not only to students and scholars of historical memory but also to researchers of race and racism, as well as those working on ethnicity and migration.

The issue of race relations, linked to the current development of Brazil, prompts reflection on how development would be if there were racial equality. Within the axiom of global targets of greater production and capital accumulation, priority is often given to economic development, at the cost of racism and sexism, among other inequalities and acts of violence. There is an important reflection in the collection of papers (Gomes et al., 2013) provided to support the discussions at the III National Conference for the Promotion of Racial Equality in November 2013, under the overall theme of “Democracy and development without racism: for an affirmative Brazil”. Resumo Este artigo apresenta uma revisão crítica de teorias, técnicas e práticas que visam a potencialização da saúde de mulheres negras com foco em concepções sobre resiliência. Além da literatura acadêmica, em especial da psicologia, o texto mobiliza diferentes fontes sobre relações raciais, inclusive a produção do movimento social. Mulheres negras estão expostas à privação de direitos humanos, à ineficiência dos programas de governo na garantia do direito à educação e à saúde integral, entre outros. Estão também expostas à incidência frequente do racismo e do sexismo, que se traduzem em prejuízos à sua saúde. A concepção processual de resiliência adotada neste artigo, que resulta tanto da reflexão crítica sobre a literatura como de resultados de pesquisa apresentados, fortalece a adoção de uma perspectiva psicossocial, resultante da análise das vulnerabilidades integrada ao quadro dos direitos humanos.
