2021, Studies of Archaeoastronomy
PANTHEON - ACHITECTURE & LIGHT đ Direct link to the Book: tinyurl.com/2p8eyr4p The new book by Marina De Franceschini and Giuseppe Veneziano, published by Rirella Editrice, is entitled âPantheon. Architecture & Lightâ. It is about their discoveries of Archaeoastronomy in the Pantheon: the Arc of Light and the Square of Light. They are sacred illuminations that can still be seen today and had a very precise symbolic meaning. The book traces the millenary history of this extraordinary building, a masterpiece of ancient Roman architecture, which still today has the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world. It is the first of the Series "Studies of Archaeoastronomy", volumes with full color pictures, which explain the discoveries of Archaeoastronomy made by Marina De Franceschini and Giuseppe Veneziano in the Pantheon and in other Roman buildings, such as Hadrianâs Villa in Tivoli, Castel Sant'Angelo and the Grotto of Tiberius in Sperlonga. â In English and also in Italian language.

Built by the emperor Hadrian starting in 117 A.D., the villa is a masterpiece of ancient Roman architecture. Our Accademia Pilot project studied and surveyed the Accademia Esplanade, the highest artificial terrace of the villa, discovering that it was astronomically oriented along the solstitial axis, as were its main buildings, Accademia and Roccabruna. From 2009 to 2011 we photographed a series of light phenomena. In the Accademia at dawn of the winter solstice or at sunset of the summer solstice (opposed by 180°) the sun shines through the main axis of the building, creating spots of light in the Temple of Apollo. In Roccabruna at the summer solstice the sun creates a blade of light inside the dome. Archaeoastronomy provided a new key for understanding the meaning and function of those buildings, which were probably dedicated to the cult of the Egyptian goddess Isis, linked to the seasons.

The Symbolic Use of Light in Hadrianic Architecture and the 'Kiss of the Sun' in Archaeoastronomy and Ancient Technologies 2018, 6(1), 111-1372018 â˘
Published in Archaeoastronomy and Ancient Technologies, see link below http://aaatec.org/art/a_fm1 http://aaatec.org/documents/article/fm1.pdf In this presentation we will discuss three Roman monuments of the times of Emperor Hadrian (117-138 AD): the Villa Adriana at Tivoli near Rome, the Mausoleum of Hadrian in Rome (now Castel Sant'Angelo) and finally the Pantheon (also in Rome). In all of them we see luminous phenomena which occur only in few set days during the year; they correspond to astronomical events such as the Solstices or other important dates of the Roman calendar. As we will see, this did not happen by chance and had a precise symbolic meaning. Also, we will explain why there are no written sources about Roman oriented buildings and their illuminations, producing an ancient and rare documentation: the description of the "Kiss of the Sun".

Marina De Franceschini and Giuseppe Veneziano discovered and studied the astronomical orientation of Accademia and of the Accademia esplanade in Hadrian's Villa near Tivoli (Rome) . They confirmed the discovery of the astronomical orientation of Roccabruna made by american architects Robert Mangurian and Mary-Ann Ray. The results of their study are published in the volume Villa Adriana Architettura Celeste. I segreti dei Solstizi. Roma 2011.

There is no need to go to Stonehenge in Great Britain, to Abu Simbel in Egypt or to Chichen Itza in Mexico to see the magic light effects of Solstice and Equinox. They exist also in Italy, in Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli, and still function. Emperor Hadrian can impress us with extraordinary light phenomena that are taking place in the Accademia and in Roccabruna only during the days of the Solstices. In this book you will discover a new and fascinating field of study on the meaning of roman architecture and on the symbolic power of the rays of the Sun.
A new discovery of a second light phenomenon in Roccabruna confirms our previous discoveries. Conduit A creates a circular spot of light inside the dome of Roccabruna, on Winter Solstice. This date corresponds to the astronomical orientation of the Accademia Esplanade and of the buildings of Accademia and Roccabruna.

After new reasearch, something more about the symbolic meaning of the Arc of LIght and of the Square of Light, visible in the days of April 7th and September 4th. Further progress in this research is pubished in 2021 in the book "Pantheon, Architecture & Light" by Marina De Franceschini: https://rirella-editrice.com/schedashop.aspx?idArt=2890&desc=PANTHEON.%20ARCHITETTURA%20E%20LUCE&l=EN
This paper is about our new discovery of the astronomical orientation of the Mausoleum of Hadrian (today's Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome). It is oriented to the Cardinal points but nothing happens during the Equinox. Special luminous phenomena take place instead on Summer Solstice, which was a key date for other astronomically oriented buildings constructed by emperor Hadrian: Hadrian's Villa and the Pantheon.
