Medieval Weapons and Equipment

If we want to talk about training of archivists in the 21st century we must bear in mind that preservation of documents in their original form has to be one of the most important tasks of archivists - not only in the 21st century but every time. Generally, one of the principal tasks of archives, libraries, museums and other memory institutions is preservation of objects and materials of cultural heritage in their original form. It represents an enormous interdisciplinary complex problem. Participation of experts from different fields of science and technology, practical end-users, conservators and restorers supported by adequate financial background is inevitable in solution of partial problems in this field. The paper informs about the research project “Conservation and stabilisation of cultural heritage objects from natural organic compounds by low temperature plasma” and its aims at the Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology, Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava.

The article deals with a new find of a decorated battle-axe head, which can be dated with a high degree of certainty to the Great Moravian period. The axe head was found in the Oblekovice cadastre in Znojmo in 2021 during metal detecting and handed over to the South Moravian Museum. Subsequent prospection of the site surroundings did not reveal any other related finds. In Moravia, the Oblekovice axe head is unique for its decoration.

Settlement relics of a community representing the Pomeranian culture on site 4 in Bożepole Wielkie, Wejherowo District-a burial ground or a settlement with a grave? The authors of the article present the results of archaeological excavations carried out at site 4 in Bożepole Wielkie, Wejherowo District. It is where settlement relics of the Pomeranian culture were discovered. They include the remains of a settlement and a single fortified grave. As evidenced by an analysis of the source material, they date back to phase D of the Hallstatt period.

xx a. septintą-aštuntą dešimtmetį pedagogės, lituanistės ir kraštotyrininkės Emilijos adiklienės pastangomis Palangoje buvo aktyviai renkami eksponatai būsimam muziejui. 1966 m. E. adiklienė tapo tuometinės Lietuvos TsR Paminklų apsaugos ir kraštotyros draugijos Palangos skyriaus pirmininke. Palangos bendruomenė buvo skatinama aktyviai prisidėti prie būsimo muziejaus kūrimo, perduoti turimus etnografinius ir su krašto kultūriniu palikimu susijusius daiktus. Kraštotyrininkai aktyviai dalyvavo etnografinėse išvykose į Palangos apylinkes. Palangos kurorto muziejuje saugoma E. adiklienės kraštotyrinio palikimo dalis yra straipsnyje ir jo priede nagrinėjamas archeologinis rinkinys, pirmą kartą publikuojamas šiame straipsnyje. Rinkinys sudarytas daugiausia iš metalinių archeologinių dirbinių, priskiriamų kuršių, lamatiečių kultūrai.

Die Arbeit stellt die Ergebnisse der zweiten Etappe von archäologischen Rettungsarbeiten auf dem frühmittelalterlichen Gräberfeld in Mroczków Ślepy dar. Es Wurden 2 nächsten Gräber entdeckt, insgesamt die Zahl der geretteten Gräber gibt. Während der geführten Rettungsarbeiten wurden ans nährend das Gebiet der Gräberfelder und schäfzungsweise die Bestattungszahl bestimmt. Zur Ausstattung der Gräber gehören vor allem Schläferinge, die Gebrauchszeit des Gräberfeldes für die 2. Hälfte und eventueel den Anfang des XIII, Jahrhunderts bestimmen lassen. Der Charakter des Gräberfeldes und die Bestattunsart sind für nicht kirchliche Gräberfelder aus dem frühen Mittelalter typisch. This paper focuses on a falchion in the Luigi Marzoli Museum, Brescia (inv. G15). Its entire blade is covered with a distinctive design comprising lines of short and deep parallel semi-circular niches. This unusual detail is found on other arms in international museum collections, two of which bear the signature "Faustino Gelpho bresciano". This paper will consider connections between this idiosyncratic style and the unknown craftsman, Faustino Ghelfo. It will also attempt to reconstruct a portrait of master Ghelfo based on a possible personal modus operandi.

Cieľom príspevku je prezentovať výskum (2018–2022) na hrade Hrušov. Výskum sa uskutočnil na nádvorí stredného hradu, v juhovýchodnom paláci a pred bránou do stredného hradu. Bol realizovaný Archeologickým ústavom v Nitre v spolupráci s Občianskym združením Leustach. Predmetný výskum priamo nadviazal na činnosť súkromnej spoločnosti PAMARCH a Katedry archeológie UKF v Nitre. Na nádvorí bol odkrytý južný vstup do západnej hospodárskej budovy. Zachytené boli zvyšky po parkánovom múre a stavebné zásahy z konca 20. rokov 20. stor. Pri západnom hradbovom múre sme v najspodnejších vrstvách zachytili zlomky keramiky zo 14.–15. stor. Zaujímavým nálezom sú aj odpadové žľaby u západnej hradby. V juhovýchodnom paláci sme zachytili mohutný parkánový múr, ktorý sa neskôr stal súčasťou nádvoria medzi delovou baštou a hranolovou delovou baštou. Pred vstupom do stredného hradu sme preskúmali mostový pilier a odpadové žľaby. Materiálna kultúre získaná z výskumu pochádza hlavne zo 16. –18.stor.

The paper presents the research (2018–2022) at Hrušov Castle. The research was carried out in the courtyard of the central castle, in the southeastern palace and in front of the gate to the central castle. It was carried out by the Archaeological Institute in Nitra in cooperation with the Leustach Association. The research directly followed the activities of the private company PAMARCH and the Department of Archaeology of the UKF in Nitra. In the courtyard, the southern entrance to the western farm building was uncovered. Remnants of a picket fence wall and building interventions from the late 1920s were captured. At the western wall, we captured fragments of ceramics from the 14th–15th century in the lowest layers. An interesting find is also the sewage troughs at the western wall. In the southeastern palace, we captured a massive picket fence wall, which later became part of the courtyard between the cannon bastion and the prismatic cannon bastion. Before entering the central castle, we examined the bridge pillar and the sewage troughs. The material culture obtained from the research comes mainly from the 16th–18th centuries.

We discuss here 7th–8th centuries earrings discovered on the territory of Transylvania. These were
identified in graves from both Avar and Avaro-Slavic biritual burial grounds as well in settlements. Most earrings
were yielded by Avar graves compared to the burials from biritual cemeteries. Earrings were discovered in only
five settlements in Transylvania. In Transylvania, many earring types were discovered from simple examples,
ring-shaped and pointed by extremities, made in wire or round bar, to those provided with stellar pendant or
the lunula pendant earrings. Almost the majority of the artefacts have parallels on the territory of the Avar
Khaganate of the Carpathian Basin, yet also in the lower Danube basin area and on the territory of Bulgaria.
Their presence within the graves is due, on one hand, to the fact that the deceased were buried with all their dress
accessories and jewellery, including earrings, which they wore in their lifetime and on the other hand, because
of the tradition to place such objects in burial features by the family of the deceased at the time of burial. The
earrings here were worn by women and to a less extent by men and children.

In the Avar cemetery of Șpălnaca, in the point "Șugud" Alba county, which dates back to the end of the 7 th century and the first decades of the 8 th century, a bronze globular artifact was discovered inside a woman's grave; the object was manufactured through casting and was silver plated afterward, both outside and inside. The globular space was decorated with geometric motifs, in the shape of triangles and rhombuses. The decorations were made by granulation, imprinted by pressure on the hemispherical surface, and fixed in blocks by an adhesive binding agent. The upper semi-calotte placed in the middle of the upper calotte was decorated with other three semi-oval fields that intersect at the place where the bands' touch. Regardless of the functionality of the artifact, the technical characteristics of its manufacturing and ornamentation, as well as the fact that the piece was silvered, indicate that the woman, in whose grave the object was discovered within, was part of the elite of the Avar society in Transylvania.

[PL] Artykuł poświęcony jest średniowiecznej broni oraz elementom wyposażenia jeździeckiego i rzędu końskiego odkrywanym w czasie badań archeologicznych na zamku w Siewierzu w latach 1970-1974. Zespół prezentuje się podobnie do podobnych zbiorów pozyskiwanych na zamkach w Polsce, największą jego część stanowią groty bełtów i strzał, a także ostrogi, wędzidła i podkowy. Poza tym odkryto również pojedyncze groty włóczni i oszczepu, głowicę miecza, kolec morgenszternu lub cepa bojowego oraz hak do naciągania kuszy. Dzięki dopracowanej w ostatnich latach chronologii zamku udało się cały zespół podzielić na dwie grupy: pierwsza obejmuje zabytki z drugiej połowy XIII i pierwszej połowy XIV wieku, druga to zabytki z drugiej połowy XIV oraz z XV wieku. Pozwoliło to zaobserwować przemiany zachodzące w ciągu późnego średniowiecza, sygnalizowane już w syntetycznych opracowaniach ostróg i grotów pocisków.

[ENG] The article discusses medieval weapons and parts of horse and rider’s equipment discovered during archaeological
research at the castle in Siewierz in the years 1970-1974. This assemblage is similar to others obtained at castles in Poland. Its
largest part are arrowheads and boltheads, as well as spurs, bits and horseshoes. In addition, single spear and javelin heads,
a sword pommel, and crossbow spanning hook were also discovered. Based on the chronology of the castle, refined in recent
years, the entire assemblage has been divided into two groups: the first includes finds from the second half of the 13th and the
first half of the 14th centuries, while the other is composed of artefacts from the second half of the 14th and the 15th centuries.
This allowed for observing changes taking place during the Late Middle Ages, which were already noted in synthetic studies
of spurs and projectile heads.

Różnorodność typologiczna i surowcowa odkrywanych przy nowożytnych pochówkach przedmiotów daje olbrzymie możliwości interpretacyjne w zakresie obrzędowości pogrzebowej. Prowadzone przez Pracownię Dokumentacji i Konserwacji Instytutu Archeologii Uniwersytetu Mikołaja Kopernika w latach 2009–2016 badania archeologiczne w kościele i na terenie przykościelnym w Gniewie oraz w kryptach kościoła w Szczuczynie, pozwoliły na wypracowanie schematu działania na tego typu stanowiskach archeologicznych, a rejestrowane trzy główne grupy przedmiotów zabytkowych (trumny, ubiory, dewocjonalia) dostarczyły wielu informacji na temat obrzędowości pogrzebowej i pozwoliły na identyfikację zmarłych.

W latach 80. ubiegłego wieku w Instytucie Archeologii i Etnografii Uniwersytetu Mikołaja Kopernika rozpoczęto realizację programu badań nad neolitem ziemi chełmińskiej. Od samego początku był on trwale związany z projektem Archeologicznego Zdjęcia Polski. W wyniku podjętych prac na obszarze dawnego województwa toruńskiego zlokalizowano około 2500 stanowisk archeologicznych z młodszej epoki kamienia, z których około 120 przebadano metodą wykopaliskową. Pozyskano źródła archeologiczne od wczesnych faz kultury ceramiki wstęgowej rytej aż do schyłku kultury ceramiki sznurowej. Pozwala to na prowadzenie przez Zakład Młodszej Epoki Kamienia, a w jego ramach przez autorów tego opracowania, wieloaspektowych studiów nad społecznościami neolitycznymi. The subject of this release are several representatives of blunt weapons from the Middle
Ages found during the research of the site in the locality Hisarya near the vill. Dragoinovo,
municipality of Parvomai. These are two iron spikes of mace and a fragment from bone
warhead of a kisten.
According the typology of V. Yotov the bone warhead of a kisten (Fig. 1) refers to the
type I var. A (with a cylindrical bore on the long axis for iron bracket, ending with a ring).
According to V. Yotov these weapons in their bone forms are entering the Bulgarian lands with
the Pecheneg invasions in the 30th years of the 11th c. In the 2nd quarter of the 11th c. applies the
considered in this work kisten.
The other two items are mace-spikes shaped as a strongly elongated horizontal threesided
pyramid (Figs. 2 and 3). They belong to the maces of the same type and subtype,
according the classification of Popov – t. X, subt. A (Fig. 4). According to the studies maces of
this type are dated in the 12th – 13th c.

Статья посвящена изучению турецкого холодного оружия как предмета декоративно-прикладного искусства. Дано краткое описание истории изучения и экспонирования восточного оружия. Рассмотрены примеры орнаментов, материалов и техник, применяемых при создании предметов оружия. Обозначены основные тенденции в развитии декоративного убранства оружия. Приведена классификация оружия и сферы его бытования.

Artykuł stanowi opracowanie 31 zabytków używanych podczas przygotowania oraz konsumpcji posiłków, pozyskanych ze stanowiska przy ulicy Wałowej 40 w Gdańsku. Pośród wymienionych w pracy obiektów można wskazać 15 łyżek, 13 noży, w tym jeden tworzący komplet z widelcem, drugi dwuzębny widelec oraz cynowy kufel. Przedmiotem analizy jest forma i zdobienie zabytków oraz kwestia znaków wytwórców. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na komplet sztućców złożony z noża oraz dwuzębnego widelca i kolejny widelec tego typu. Sztućce te mogły być wykorzystywane do nakładania potraw z półmisków. Warte podkreślenia jest również potwierdzenie lokalnej proweniencji niektórych z łyżek lub nawet wskazanie gdańskiego wytwórcy, partacza Petera Dralanda. Európa harcterein az ókor óta szokás volt a hadseregek táborhelyeit szekerekkel körülvenni. A 15. századra ez a szokás megmaradt, ám a huszita felkelők harci szekereik segítségével sokkal jobban ki tudták használni az így felállított szekérvárak védelmi képességeit. Az alábbiakban ezt a harci járművet, illetve a szekérvárat és feltételezett képességeit tesszük elemzés tárgyává.

On the battlefields of Europe, it has been customary to surround the military camps with wagons or chariots since ancient times. This custom remained until the 15th century, as well, but the Hussite rebels were able to make much better use of the defensive capabilities of the wagon fortresses, with the help of their new invention: the war wagons. In the following, we analyze this combat vehicle, as well as the wagon fortress and its assumed capabilities.

Praca porusza kwestię powstawania i ujawniania śladów różnych materiałów na najbardziej typowych powierzchniach: plastiku, metalu, papierze, drewnie oraz szkle. W pierwszej części zostało zdefiniowane pojęcie gantiskopii oraz podana typologia w materiałoznawstwie z uwzględnieniem materiałów wykorzystywanych do produkcji rękawiczek. Celem badania było ustalenie wpływu materiału i podłoża na powstały ślad, a także wskazanie generalnych zależności między śladami pozostawionymi przez poszczególne grupy materiałów: naturalnych, sztucznych i syntetycznych na wybranych powierzchniach. Praca prezentuje wyniki własnych badań eksperymentalnych, które zilustrowano fotografiami śladów różnych materiałów wraz z oceną otrzymanych odbitek ze wskazaniem na cechy indywidualne i grupowe.

The paper presents the archaeological find of a medieval sword recovered from the riverbank deposits of the Voglajna near Bežigrad, northeast of Celje (Slovenia). The relatively well-preserved sword with a length of 95.2 cm and a mass of 765 g is part of the original collection of the Celje Regional Museum, to which it came before 1889. The shape and metric characteristics of the blade with a relatively wide fuller (Oakeshott’s Type X or Geibig’s Variant 5b) and the hilt with a short, straight crossguard and almond-shaped/lenticular pommel (Geibig’s combination Type 16 / Var. I (16-15-9-12)) show it to be an early example of swords with pommels of Oakeshott’s Type A, dating to the 11th or the first half of the 12th century. One side of the blade bears the remains of a 20 cm long sequence of inlaid iron marks, which remain indecipherable due to corrosion. The harmony of the parts seems to indicate a preserved original design, presumably produced by one of the sword workshops on the Middle Rhine. The findspot of the sword in the vicinity of Bežigrad, a topographically exposed and strategically important promon-tory near the intersection of the routes connecting Styria and Carniola, alerts to the possible existence of a military post that supplemented the control functions of the presumed early stronghold of the Margraves of the Savinja March on Zgornji (Stari) Grad in Celje. The find context of the sword places it in the predominant category of water finds, but the internal evidence (condition after conservation) of the weapon and the available data on the particular circumstances of the find do not provide sufficient support to explain the background of its sinking.

In the frame of the Nădlac-Arad Motorway project 12 graves were exca- vated from the Late Avar period near Nădlac. According to the analysis of the burial customs, various object categories of the material culture (lock rings, earring, beads, components of belts with mounts, knives, potteries) can be dated to the end of the late Avar era, which corresponds to the late 8 th or early 9 th century. It can firmly be stated that some of the finds were the products of the latest metallurgical horizon (e.g. the punched belt-hole guard mount and the belt mounts with pendants) so some of the types found here can be connected to the last horizon, which is very important concerning their dating. У  статті  розглянуто  випадкову  знахідку  рідкісної  ударної  зброї,
пернача-шестопера, яку було виявлено місцевим скарбошукачем влітку
2021 р. неподалік впаду р. Ушиці у р. Дністер у Хмельницькій обл. На
підставі  аналізу  наданих  автору  власником  предмета фото  та  вимірів
знахідки  та  низки  аналогій,  автор  робить  висновок,  що  знахідка,
найвірогідніше, має ординське походження і датується в широких межах
від кінця ХІІІ – до початку XІV ст.

[PL] Wśród licznego materiału zabytkowego pozyskanego w czasie ratowniczych badań na grodzisku w Bestwinie w 1971 roku znalazły się także zabytki skórzane, które dotąd nie zostały należycie opracowane i opublikowane. Jest to łącznie 19 fragmentów skórzanych, spośród których można rekonstruować dwa niemal pełne egzemplarze obuwia. Ponieważ w trakcie badań średniowiecznych siedzib rycerskich przedmioty skórzane są dość rzadko odkrywane zbiór ten jest tym cenniejszy. Analiza pozwoliła ustalić, że w przypadku obuwia mamy do czynienia z wyrobem miejskiego rzemiosła dystrybuowanym w czasie jarmarku, odpowiadającym modzie z XIV i początków XV wieku, przeznaczonym dla zamożniejszych mieszkańców grodu w Bestwinie, najpewniej członków rodziny właściciela rezydencji lub jego najbliższego otoczenia. Natomiast luźne elementy i skórzane ścinki sugerują, że jednocześnie na stanowisku prowadzone były drobne prace skórnicze, polegające na odzyskiwaniu surowca zdatnego do dalszego użycia w charakterze łat lub do produkcji prostszych wyrobów, wykonywane najpewniej przez czeladź dworską. Odkryte zabytki pozwoliły zatem wnioskować na temat ubioru mieszkańców dworu, źródeł ich zaopatrywania w wyroby, a także istnienia drobnego rzemiosła w średniowiecznej rezydencji rycerskiej.

[ENG] Among numerous materials that were obtained in the course of rescue excavations at the stronghold in Bestwina in 1971 there were also leather finds. These have not been properly processed and published so far. The assemblage includes 19 leather fragments altogether, among which two almost complete shoes can be reconstructed. This collection is especially valuable, as leather artefacts are rather rarely found in the course of excavations of medieval knightly residences. On the basis of examinations it was found out that in the case of shoes we were dealing with products of urban handicraft which were distributed in the course of a fair. These shoes matched 14th and early 15th c. fashion and were intended for richer inhabitants of the Bestwina stronghold, in all probability for family members or the closest entourage of the residence owner. On the other hand, loose parts and leather scraps imply that in the same time minor leatherworking activities were taking place at the site. These activities consisted in recovering raw material that could be further used as patches or for making simpler products. These works were in all probability conducted by court servants. Therefore, the discovered artefacts allowed for drawing conclusions on the dress of court inhabitants, their sources of acquisition of artefacts and on the existence of small-scale handicraft in a medieval knightly residence.

Straipsnyje, remiantis archeologiniais duomenimis, apžvelgiama XVII–XVIII a. Lietuvos periferijos miestelių avalynė. Kaip tipinės miestiečių avalynės pavyzdžiai detaliai pristatomi ir analizuojami XVII a. avalynės radiniai, aptikti Žagarės miesto archeologinių kasinėjimų (archeologas Ernestas Vasiliauskas) metu. Aptikti du pusbačiai ir trys klepės iki šiol yra vieninteliai informatyviausi miestiečių avalynę reprezentuojantys archeologiniai radiniai, surasti ne Lietuvos reikšmingiausių senųjų prekybos miestų teritorijoje, o periferijos miesteliuose. Radiniai autoriaus konservuoti ir restauruoti, aptartos tokio pobūdžio radinių konservavimo ir restauravimo problemos, siekiant maksimaliai išsaugoti jų informatyvumą tolesniam įvairiapusiam pažinimui. Ištirta radinių konstrukcija ir medžiagiškumas, atskleista avalynės gamybos technologija. Radiniai palyginti su to laikotarpio Vakarų Europos analogais.
