Throughout history, the building of great and influential cities has symbolized global influence and power. The cities of Asia are emerging as the greatest and most influential in the world, once again. 1 There are more urban dwellers in the cities of Asia than the rest of the world combined. 2 This amounts to nearly 2.3 billion urban dwellers living in Asian cities and more than 29% of the global population. As of 2019, Asia is more urban than non-urban. 3 These astounding numbers demand attention from the church in Asia and across the world.

This book is mainly a collection of articles and reflections written by friends and former colleagues of Simon Barrington-Ward, an Anglican bishop and missionary statesman, who, though 'full of years', sadly died of COVID-19 in the early days of the pandemic in April 2020. Four of the chapters republish earlier writings of Simon himself. My attention was first drawn to this book through an article published in the secular newspaper The Times one Saturday in January 2022 (Influence of great Anglican crossed culture and creed | Register | The Times) written by one of the book's editors, Graham Kings. The article read like an undiluted eulogy; which, given the ambiguity of my feelings about Simon Barrington-Ward and the way that his attitudes and behaviour have affected my own life, I found rather challenging. I am glad to say that the book itself is, taken as a whole, more measured.

It has been a forced departure from the idea of narrating historical stages of Christianity in South India but to delve on the existing historiography on early South Indian Christianity. The rationale behind is that the writings of different authors about the emergence of Christianity in India, south India in particular has still been not accepted completely and kept as a debatable topic. Paucity of primary data in this particular field makes historians handicapped. The available historical sources comes in the way of 'tradition' are not sufficient to satisfy international community on this important socio-cultural history of India. The fact is that there are many areas in the historical past for which historians do not have sources to construct them elaborately for understanding. They fell right in the historical period for which historians supposedly have plenty of sources to understand that stages. These are the black holes exist in historical past. This could completely turn around the structure of a particular society if not a whole state when they are explored and understood. The early history of Christianity in south India cannot be put under Dark Age type either, as it has some sources (Indian tradition) and references (apocryphal writings on Indian Christianity) to build an idea. Nevertheless, array of historical writings both in missionary perspectives and historical methods on this field has been established from 3 rd century AD for the first type and from 19 th century AD for the second type. The missionary based writings are declining in postcolonial setup. Through Eric Frykenberg's self accusation of his own master narratives with post colonial and subaltern methods one can observe that shift had happened quite long before his original work on the 'Christianity in India: From the Beginnings to the Present'. Religious texts always have evangelical proselytizing trait inherited onto them. Understanding the psycho lingual nuances, embedded objectives and contexts of these texts are very difficult for even a trained historian to maintain historical objectivity let alone the common reader. This is the problem of the given topic. However, acceptance, towards historical truths will lead us to the destination of historical objectivity. Here, some writings and their subjective themes are derived in order to understand the problem.

This article offers an exposition of this passage, with the hope of encouraging and inspiring fellow believers in the Lord to embrace the opportunity to lead a life where Christ holds the primary position.

Archaeological constructions of past identities often rely more or less explicitly on contemporary notions of culture and community in ways that can sometimes oversimplify the past and present. The archaeology of European colonialism has shown the proliferation of ‘hybrid’ identities that emerged from relatively recent cross-cultural encounters (though this concept is not without its critics). We argue that this perspective can also inform interpretations of the deeper past, with specific reference to ongoing research in the Polynesian Outliers of Futuna and Aniwa, south Vanuatu. Polynesian Outliers represent precisely the kinds of cross-cultural spaces where hybrid identities likely emerged during the pre-European era. A theoretical approach drawing on archaeological approaches to hybridity and ethnogenetic theories applied to the south Vanuatu Outliers allows for a clearer understanding of the roles difference and familiarity played in identity formation in the past.

Historici buigen zich geregeld over de populaire vraag hoe missie en kolonialisme zich in het verleden tot elkaar verhielden. Gewoonlijk kijken onderzoekers dan naar missionering vanuit een koloniaal perspectief en analyseren ze de politieke, economische, sociale en culturele kant van het missieverhaal. Deze masterproef vertrekt echter vanuit het perspectief van de missionarissen zelf en het instituut waaraan zij verbonden waren. Concreet wordt de missie van de benedictijnse Sint-Andriesabdij van Zevenkerken naar Katanga in Zuid-Oost-Congo bestudeerd.

In het najaar van 1910 stuurde de Sint-Andriesabdij een eerste groep van vijf pioniers naar Katanga in Belgisch-Congo. Deze thesis onderzoekt welke ideeën aan de basis lagen van de missiedrang van de Sint-Andriesabdij en waarom de abdij in 1910 een missie in Katanga aanvatte. De onderzoeksperiode omvat de lange aanloop naar de missie startend in de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw en de beginperiode van de missie die eindigt met het uitbreken van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. De werken van Christian Papeians de Morchoven over de geschiedenis van de Sint-Andriesabdij worden daarbij als bronnen gebruikt, aangevuld met de jaargangen 1909-1914 van het missietijdschrift van de abdij. Daarnaast worden de persoonlijke motivatie en ervaringen van zes benedictijnse missionarissen in Katanga bestudeerd voor de periode 1910-1914. Dat wordt geanalyseerd aan de hand van brieven die de missionarissen naar abt Théodore Nève stuurden.

Centraal in de verklaring voor de missiedrang van de Sint-Andriesabdij staat haar stichter, dom Gérard van Caloen. Zijn ideaalbeeld van het benedictijnse leven bestond uit missionering en onderwijs. Die visie werd door vele factoren beïnvloed. De sociale achtergrond van van Caloen, zijn trouw aan de paus en de centrale kerkelijke instellingen in Rome, een romantische idealisering van de kerstening in de middeleeuwen en het geloof in de maakbaarheid van de samenleving speelden allemaal een rol in het vormen van het missionaire gedachtegoed van dom Gérard.

De keuze om in 1910 een missie in Katanga te starten, was niet zo evident. Toch waren er argumenten om het wel te doen, zoals steun van de Belgische regering en het koningshuis. Het vooruitzicht om de invloed van protestantse zendelingen en vrijmetselarij in de kolonie te bestrijden motiveerde de abdij. Wedijver met de benedictijnse abdij van Maredsous en aanmoedigingen van paus Pius X gaven uiteindelijk de doorslag.

De persoonlijke motivatie van individuele benedictijnse missionarissen in Katanga liep sterk uiteen. Religieuze en koloniale factoren als de drang om te evangeliseren en dus beschaving te brengen, vormden de basis voor hun roeping als missionaris. Concurrentie met protestanten en vrijmetselaars speelde voor de missionarissen een belangrijke rol. Interne competitie met andere katholieke orden situeerde zich vooral op een hoger niveau, gewone benedictijnen waren daar minder mee bezig. In Belgisch-Congo konden de Belgische missionarissen daarnaast ook het vaderland dienen. Voor de pioniers was ook het avontuurlijke aspect van hun missie in Katanga niet te onderschatten. Verschillende elementen zorgden er echter ook voor dat de motivatie van de missionarissen onder druk kwam te staan. De ene missionaris was gelukkig en wou nergens anders zijn, de andere wou niets liever dan terug te keren naar het leven als monnik in de Sint-Andriesabdij.

Though the dominant culture church in the United States exists within the context of racialized society, often the church has not directly addressed its unjust and traumatic effects. It is the theory of this project that with a more accurate understanding of racialized society, trauma, and coping behaviors, dominant culture ministries will engage more fully in the process of reconciliation. Therefore, this thesis seeks to lay out a theologically anchored process of reconciliation by which dominant culture ministries can be equipped to respond to experiences of racial injustice and trauma in ways that lead to and facilitate healing, justice, and equity for racial minorities. Missionary activities were very strong in Poland before the Second World War. The establishment of a Communist regime after 1945 led to a break in the number of missionaries sent worldwide and, soon after, to a liquidation of all missionary institutions in the country. Because the Catholic Church was very strong, the state did not dare to launch an immediate and frontal attack on the church until 1947. From 1948 however, a full-blown campaign against the church began with nationalization, imprisonments and prohibitions, notably of mission activities. After 15 years, however, some forms of compromise between church and state began to appear. This allowed the Church to rebuild its missionary movement – as of 1965. The year 1980 saw the emergence of the Solidarity movement and the begining of the unmaking of Communism. Measuring temperature in tribological contacts remains being a huge challenge. The present paper proposes a new approach to analyze and optimize the thermo-mechanical behaviour of a dry-running clutch without affecting the real interacting surfaces. Using fibre-optic sensing technology makes it possible to gain a very detailed view of temperature distribution in the system. The interpretation of the measurements for different load situations has shown that the behaviour in the first 0.8 s is very similar. But after 0.8 s slip-time, the temperature distribution varies considerably according to the load situations. This behaviour is linked to the clutch engagement parameters and the resulting slip time. Non-lubricated clutches are still subject to numerous investigations in order to determine their dynamic behaviour, especially the dynamic behaviour. This article aims to examine the relationship between Israel and the end of time from the point of view of end of time theology and to explore the biblical observations of the end of time. Evidence from the Bible and Christian books written around the last days have been used as resources to come up with the study findings. According to the findings, although there is a habit of looking at the end of time from the point of view of Israel in the Christian community, there are controversies in theological views about the current situation of Israel and the end of time. Scripture of Daniel, Revelation, and Romans 11 passages of the Bible written about the end times have been interpreted inversely. Some follow a Replacement Theology perspective. Others consider Israel to be an important reference point for the end times. Some Christians hold a strictly literal interpretation of these prophecies. However, it is understood that the Bible has laid down sufficient and clear principles of the inevitability of the second coming of Jesus Christ and how Christians should wait for the second coming of Jesus Christ.
