Great War

Artykuł dotyczy miejscowości Boczki położonej w północno-zachodniej części gminy Szadek. Jest on zbiorem informacji uzyskanych podczas kwerendy w archiwach, bibliotekach regionalnych i internecie. Historia Boczek sięga najprawdopodobniej od XIV wieku. Ślady obecności człowieka na tym obszarze notowane są do czasów prehistorycznych. Wieś przeżywała wszystkie wydarzenia związane z historią Polski. Ślady swoje zostawiło w niej zarówno powstanie styczniowe, jak i I oraz II wojna światowa.

From a Political Discourse Theory (PDT) perspective, this article interrogates the role of fantasy in the political-spatial discourse of conservative Protestants in Derry, a divided city in the northwest of Ireland. This article argues, along with recent studies, that the insights of PDT offers a post-foundational and discursive account of the spatial, one that is particularly helpful in understanding the dynamics of spatial contestation in divided societies. The category of fantasy is critical to this discursive conceptualisation of the spatial, as illustrated here through a study of how the fantasmatic spatial imaginary of conservative Protestants in nineteenth-century Derry structured their material practices of space-claiming. Empirically, the article examines two riots that occurred in Derry in 1868 and 1883.

The study focuses on a very detailed overview of the events both on the Karst section of the Isonzo Front as well as in Brienne-le Chateau, Gigny-Brandon, France, during World War I and Giuseppe Ungaretti’s participation in the various battles along with his composition of individual poems. Based on the historical documentation and concurrent reading of his letters from the front and the place and date of the creation of his poems, it can be confirmed that the poet’s voluntary participation in the war played a key role in his poetic creation but also in his national self-determination. The detailed overview of the historical facts and his composing also led to the yet undetected inconsistency between the geographical placement of some poems in the village of Lokvica na Krasu and the actual situation on the front.

The article is devoted to the publication of “A Mortifying Disclosure” in the British newspaper “The Times” on August 24, 1917, with criticism of British foreign policy towards the Ottoman Empire, in particular the actions of Louis Mallet, the British ambassador in Constantinople. The mentioned publication, as well as the discussion caused by it, are little covered in historiography. Much more information is provided by the primary sources, represented by the documents of the British National Archives (The National Archives, TNA), and also by the memoirs of the participants of researched events. In the mentioned article, Louis Mallet was criticized for short-sightedness and excessive credulity. According to the author of the publication, the Turkish grand vizier deceived the British ambassador, even when the choice of the Ottoman Empire in favor of entering the war on the side of the Central Powers became obvious. Il medievalismo rappresenta, senza ombra di dubbio, il fenomeno culturale più rilevante della società contemporanea: dalla fine degli anni ’70 del secolo scorso tale rilevanza è stata riconosciuta e praticata nella e dalla storiografia medievistica internazionale, ma in Italia solo negli ultimi decenni alla storia del Medioevo come cadenza cronologica definita dall’interpretazione rigorosa delle fonti si sta in modo progressivo affiancando la storia delle modificazioni ed evoluzioni del Medioevo nell’immaginario occidentale, ovvero delle ‘fortune’ di un tempo che per definizione è tempo pluriel potentiel e ambito preferenziale per praticare una storiografia allargata e incrociata. Il Medioevo del medievalismo, che si può definire ‘divulgativo’, plasma in misura assai significativa la percezione della ‘storia medievale’ da parte del pubblico dei non specialisti, essendo costruito su una serie di stereotipi/topoi molto difficilmente sostituibili – pur se ‘decostruibili’ - per la loro forza tradizionale, la loro efficacia ‘sentimentale’ e la loro innegabile bellezza. Si propone qui una riflessione sulle interferenze e gli incroci fra tali stereotipi e la storiografia medievistica contemporanea, cercando di individuare i termini della ricezione del Medioevo come epoca storica nella società e riprendendo le principali linee interpretative della discussione scientifica più recente in merito allo statuto disciplinare del medievalismo.

Rzecz nie w kwestii, jak my sobie – i dla siebie – złożymy porządek „Systemu”, ale w odkryciu, jaki on jest naprawdę – ze względu na zawartość jakościową wszystkich składowych i reguły wzajemnych relacji, mieszczące się w jego własnej przestrzeni, a nie w przypisywanych metodach.

W 1965 r. odbył się wielki, ogólnokrajowy zwiad Związku Harcerstwa Polskiego zorganizowany przy współpracy z Radą Ochrony Pomników Walk i Męczeństwa. Miał on na celu uczczenie dwudziestolecia PRL przez zauważenie jego dokonań i pamięć o tych, którzy zginęli w walce z hitleryzmem lub stali się jego ofiarami. Celem alertu było również uzupełnienie prowadzonej przez ROPWiM ewidencji miejsc pamięci narodowej o nowe, dotychczas niezinwentaryzowane i nieznane w szerszej skali lokalizacje. Trzydniowa intensywna akcja zaowocowała przygotowaniem tysięcy meldunków alertowych, które wysłano do Kwatery Głównej ZHP. Wśród meldunków znalazły się również takie, które dotyczyły zagłady Żydów: miejsc straceń i zagrzebania zwłok. Szczególną wartość alertów stanowi to, że drużyny miały za zadanie odszukiwanie miejsc w najbliższym sąsiedztwie (do 8 km od szkoły), a zatem prowadziły wywiady we własnym środowisku, wśród lokalnych świadków. The starting point for this chapter is the proposition that the First World
War in Eastern Europe had a significant impact on the course and character of modernization in that area. Measures that were planned and partially implemented during the war became prototypes for mega-projects for mastering natural landscapes, forerunners of ecological and technological catastrophes.
The industrial character of the armed confrontation rapidly transformed
landscapes through the construction of railroads and canals, the draining of marshes, the development of new sources of raw materials, the search for substitute materials, the felling of forests, and the contamination of the ground.
In addition to blurring the boundaries between front and rear, the mobility of the Eastern Front and the accompanying militarization of its vast territories witnessed efforts to achieve mastery over the environment, which led to the reckless mobilization of resources and the subordination of nature to the logic of military discipline. The states that arose from the ruins of the multiethnic empires on the Eastern Front were forced to grapple with the toxic—literal as well as metaphorical—legacy of wartime ecological policy. Studying this multifaceted theme offers the prospect of interesting new contributions to modern historiography.

Battisti non è mai divenuto una figura-simbolo della
sinistra italiana? Questo saggio indaga le ragioni filosofico-
politiche di questa rimozione.

Les carnets d’artistes combattants ont fait l’objet d’éditions, d’expositions et ventes, ainsi que de numérisations et d’expositions virtuelles dans le cadre des missions pédagogiques du centenaire de la Grande Guerre. Cet article étudie les enjeux philologiques et patrimoniaux du carnet de guerre en explorant plusieurs contextes et domaines : archives et collections, expositions, éditions et presse illustrée. Les formats des carnets d’artistes combattants nous invitent à confronter genres et thèmes iconographiques, pratiques artistiques et littéraires, profils et trajectoires biographiques. Du fait que ces carnets contiennent notations graphiques, chromatiques, textes et photographies, les recherches et les montages documentaires sont confrontés à l’hétérogénéité et à l’hybridité des formats, tandis que leurs usages vont de l’expérimentation artistique au projet éditorial.

The subject of the article is the way of portraying the female participants of the January Uprising
in recent popular Polish historical novels. Next to the traditional image of the Polish female patriot,
the Polish mother most-often a noble woman who deals with auxiliary activities (provision, care for
the wounded), are presented women from other social strata, interested with emancipation issues and
activities involved in armed struggle. In addition, these novels become a pretext to restore the memory
of historical heroines as well as to reinterpret their fates, sometimes in an unobvious way

In the files of the psychiatric archives, autographed writings of pa- tients are kept on which doctors and linguists can compare them- selves, with the respective categories of judgment. This is the case of the former mental hospital of Pergine Valsugana and how psychia- trists, at the end of the Great War, underestimated war trauma and as- sessed linguistic behavior in relation to the model of the Italian school system rather than the current uses of popular Italian.
