Although scholars tend to draw a line of confrontation between the conquerors Normans and the conquered Muslims and Greeks in the kingdom of Sicily, the actual relationship among these people was not so simple. In the kingdom there was a relatively developed bureaucracy staffed by officials with varied cultural backgrounds. The kings and these bureaucrats took a stand against the aristocrats, who had solely Latin Christian backgrounds. In fact, the keynote of the political history of the kingdom was a process in which the kings together with bureaucrats held down the aristocrats and cities of the peninsula. The kings and bureaucrats, who had different cultural backgrounds but were highly educated and cultured, took a stand against aristocrats who were not well cultured but trained as warriors. However, this line of confrontation was visible only during the peacetime. During the wartime, a line of confrontation was drawn within aristocrats and cities that had military power. Aristocrats and cities were divided into a pro-king group and an anti-king one, and fought amongst each other, while bureaucrats were usually on the side of the kings. This suggests that even the mighty Norman kings supported by the bureaucrats were by no means absolute. The strong Norman kingship of Sicily was in fact only made possible by a delicate balance of power among aristocrats, cities, and bureaucrats.

In the 1930s, Kunio Yanagita, founder of Japanese folklore, proposed an ambitious project called "global folkloristics" in order to create a space for dialogue open to all scholars throughout the world so that different kinds of knowledge produced in different parts of the world could be exchanged on an equal basis. Yanagita's ideal is beginning to be realized today in such projects as "world anthropology" and the creation of an international organization of foklore societies.

One of the most widely studied motifs in Heian period literature is that of 垣間見,kaimami or peeking,it is usually added, through a gap in a fence,垣,kaki. Even so,the fence as such has not received as much attention as the phenomenon it purportedly gives rise to.Peeking, glimpsing and stealing glances have been attentively looked at,extending the field to gaps in blinds, curtains and shutters, and even to occasions where the only obstacles belong to the strictures of ritual, social or psychological decorum. Here, the fence itself will be the site of interest.Different works will be scanned for appearances of this very important element, prop and metaphor, that has remained active in the literature, and in the culture, from the earliest chronicles, such as古事記,Kojiki, to the Heian period tales, among which竹取物語,Taketori Monogataro, 伊勢物語,Ise Monogatari and 源氏物語,Genji Monogatari will be looked at for particular occurrences. However, the fence is not only a literary object,it also figures materially in the culture, specifically in the complex of ritual surrounding finerary and accession ceremonies and,as the Kojiki narratives reveal,it is an unavoidable piece of architectural support for courtship and reproducuon,a guarantee of genealogical continuity, as well as a metaphor for power. This complex of meanings of the fence maintains its validity throughout, because it functions as a cultural metaphor, widely used and understood, and not dependent on specific instances of textual allusion or precedence. The fence is in a sense a very real metaphor and a very solid reality. It could be said to be one of the founding signs of Japanese culture. Part 1 of 2 http://hdl.handle.net/11094/67493

Under European colonial domination in the Caribbean, the plantation-based exploitation caused the mass migration of agricultural laborers from diverse parts of the world. This led to a mélange of races and cultures and a social stratification system that closely correlated racial and ethnic identities with socioeconomic status. These characteristics of the colonial social structure and their post-colonial repercussions have constantly challenged the political and intellectual elites to address the issues of state formation and nation-building. The Caribbean has been, and is likely to remain, a strategic field for inquiry into nationalism in racially and ethnically diverse societies. This is because of its pioneering and continued experiences in transnational migration and the subsequent interracial and intercultural communications, conflicts, and connections.

For a long time, economics has not made a distinction between equilibrium and stationary process. Observing that economies are basically stationary, it is reasoned that the situation is near the state where agents have no intention of changing their behavior even if they are to make a decision for a second time. The reality is far from this. This paper proposes a new image of economics. Economies are stationary process with a certain extent of fluctuations. For a human agent with bounded rationality and sight, the fact that the situation is stationary is the very basis for him to be able to behave properly in a complex environment such as economy. This is what classical economics assumed and what differentiate it from neo-classical economics.

KK-Ay mice, a relevant model of human type 2 diabetes mellitus, are used worldwide for the assessment of pharmacological effects of new anti-diabetes drugs. KK-Ay mice were examined at five weeks of age (non-hyperglycemic condition) and at 10 and 14 weeks of age (hyperglycemic condition). Islet cell hypertrophy was observed in 10- and 14-week-old mice. The area ratio of islet cells to total pancreas significantly increased compared to that of age-matched C57BL/6J mice. Plasma insulin concentration increased in 14-week-old KK-Ay mice. Enlargement of mesangial matrix and increased glomerular area were seen in kidneys of KK-Ay mice. Fatty changes were observed in the liver. Total plasma cholesterol and triglyceride levels increased compared to that of five-week-old KK-Ay mice. The present results on young/adult KK-Ay mice indicate that the hyperglycemic state developing at the early stage of diabetes mellitus is due to related changes in systemic organs.
