ABSTRACT Acilia Plecusa is undoubtedly one of the best known figures among the inhabitants of the ancient Roman city of Singilia Barba (El Castillón, Antequera). She was a former slave who was manumitted by her master to whom he married in the second half of the second century AD, thus representing a clear example of social promotion in the old Betica. A wide epigraphic series related to her is known, as well as a familiar
ABSTRACT In the present work, we consider to make a study about the means of social promotion used by the freedmen and the relations that the members of this social group could support with the municipal aristocracies, using the epigraphy documentation preserved in the Roman province of the Baetica. The freedmen with economic resources sought to improve their social position and to prepare the promotion of their descendants using the means that they had to their scope, as the evergetism, the performance of the Augustal priesthood and the obtaining of municipal honors. For the reasons pointed out above, our aim will consist of looking and analyzing the existing documentation that shows the mechanisms used by the rich freedmen to promote in the cities of the roman Baetica. Equally, we will try to argue if these processes could turn reached and in what measure.

ABSTRACT: The marriage between a patron and his freedwoman was very common in the Roman society. She could be manumitted by her patron to get married with him. If he did not get married with his freedwoman, he could start a concubinage with her. These unionswere studied by Roman jurists. From the legal sources, we can analyze some aspects related to them such as divorce, adultery or the dignitas of the freedwomen. Epigraphic sources are very important to study real examples of these unions in the ancient Roman Empire. Moreover, we also analyze their children, the social setting and the social promote of the freedwomen.

Between urbs and fundus: funeral and honorific commemoration among the hispano-roman local elites in the space of their rustic properties. Abstract: We tray in this paper to show the close relationship kept by the members of the families belonging to the Hispanic municipal aristocracy with their rustic properties. Many local aristocratic members, being agricultural possessores, owed to spend their time between the urbs, where they displayed their public life, and their fundi, from where they obtained the economical resources which allowed to keep themselves as members of the municipal ordines decurionum. On the other hand, the funeral epigraphs and the statuaries erected in their homage, founded in the rural territory of numerous cities of Hispania, show us the will of many local noblemen for being buried within their rustic ownership, or for exhibiting their merita in the pars urbana of their villages. That is the proof that their life took usually place between the city and their rural properties.
