In this paper I determine the purpose of manufacturing the device we now call Antikythera Mechanism. First I present the latest relevant findings and conclusions of the ongoing multidisciplinary research. Then, the significant features of the night sky, as seen through the eyes of a gazer during the Greco-Roman era are described. Next, a table with all the functions of this mechanism correlated with all the, until now, proposed uses is presented and justified. As a consequence, I derive to the conclusion that the most probable use of this mechanism was as an assistance tool for strategic decision making by a political, army or navy leader. Some possible additional features are suggested.
The Author provides a thorough introduction to the five (5) most commonly used calendars in Ancient Athens through the Roman Period. This paper presents an outline of each calendar as well as a detailed example of converting an example to its Julian equivalent. This draft includes an added paragraph that permits coversions to Gregorian Calendar dates (as well as minor grammatical and bibliographic corrections)
