Enhanced energy deposition efficiency of glow discharge electron beams for metal surface treatment2000 •
2001 •
We have characterized two high voltage glow discharge configurations, with planar cathode and hollow cathode respectively, as electron beam sources. Electron beams having currents between several mA and tens of mA, energy values close to the applied voltage and variable pulse duration between hundreds ns and a few ms were obtained. The simplicity, compactness and unpretentious vacuum operation conditions recommend these electron beam sources for in situ testing and calibration of diagnostic devices.

A reflex electron beam discharge as a plasma source for electron beam generation1988 •
A reflex electron beam glow discharge has been used as a plasma source for the generation of broad-area electron beams. An electron current of 120 A (12 A/cm2) was extracted from the plasma in 10 μs pulses and accelerated to energies greater than 1 keV in the gap between two grids. The scaling of the scheme for the generation of multikiloamp high-energy electron beams is discussed

Production and application of low-energy, high-current electron beams2003 •
This article reviews experiments on the production of low-energy, high-current electron beams (LEHCEB) and their use for surface modification of materials. It is shown that electron guns with a plasma anode and an explosive emission cathode are most promising for the production of this type of beams. The problems related to the initiation of explosive emission and the production and transportation of LEHCEBs in plasma-filled diodes are considered. It has been shown that if the rise time of the accelerating voltage is comparable to or shorter than the time it takes for an ion to fly through the space charge layer, the electric field strength at the cathode and the electron current density in the layer are increased. Experimentally, it has been established that the current of the beam transported in the plasma channel is 1–2 orders of magnitude greater than the critical Pierce current and several times greater than the chaotic current of the anode plasma electrons. Methods for improvi...

Bombardment of Aluminum Plate Surface by Positive Ions in Nitrogen Gas2020 •
In this study, positive ions are produced from the ionization process of nitrogen gas using high electric fields. The high field is generated at the needle-plate electrode arrangement in a nitrogen gas environment. The highest field occurs at the tip of the needle and the ionization process takes place around the needle tip. Each nitrogen gas ionization produces one electron and one positive ion. In order to bombard the electrode plate surface, the positive ions must move from the tip of the needle to the plate electrode. The needle electrode must be supplied with a dc voltage of positive polarity while the other electrode is grounded. The results show that the bombardment effect of positive ions on an aluminum plate depends on the energy kinetic of ion when it hits the surface of the plate. The longer the average free path of the positive ions, the greater the speed and kinetic energy of ion when it collides the plate.
