19th Century German History

On 21 November 1837, the turmoil over mixed marriages between the Prussian state administration and the Rhenish Catholic Church erupted in the arrest of the Archbishop of Cologne. Less than a year later, on 14 August 1838, the Bavarian Ministry of War published an order mandating that all soldiers—regardless of religious confession—had to kneel during any eucharistic ceremony. Throughout the ‘Cologne Affair’ (Kölner Ereignis) and the Bavarian ‘Kneeling Controversy’ (Kniebeugungsstreit), Roman Catholics and Protestants protested against the violation of the right of the freedom of religion and the freedom of conscience through the legislation of state administrations. This chapter examines the ambiguous nature of religious freedom in Vormärz Germany as it was contested during the Cologne Affair and the Kneeling Controversy.

The period of Prussian rule in Warsaw has traditionally received little attention and is usually interpreted as an early climax of Prussian-German expansionism in Poland. Yet it was also a time when, under the influence of the Enlightenment, a number of important educational initiatives developed in the city. This article, published as part of the Herder Institute's Copernico blog, provides a brief overview of this form of urban diversity around 1800.

Mit Bismarck hätten »die Grünen ohnehin ihre Probleme«, wusste Bild zu berichten, weil Ende 2022 Annalena Baerbock »den berühmten Bismarck-Saal im Auswärtigen Amt« in »Saal der Deutschen Einheit« umbenannt hat und weil in Hamburg »Dauerzoff um den Umgang mit dem Bismarck-Denkmal« stattfinde, das »für Kritiker alles viel zu kolonial« sei. Bild präsentierte mit dem CDU-Abgeordneten und promovierten Historiker Christoph Ploß dann auch gleich eine bürgerlich-gebildete »Alternative für Deutschland mit Substanz«, um »Deutschland, aber normal« gegen die so ungezogenen wie ungebildeten »Gören« der »Letzten Generation« zu verteidigen: Festers »Bildungslücken« würden deutlich machen, »wie falsch der woke Bildersturm auf Bismarck ist. Bevor die Grünen alle Erinnerungen an Bismarck bekämpfen, sollten sie sich lieber mehr mit der deutschen Geschichte beschäftigen«.

Dietmar Dath schrieb einmal, dass »die Besitzenden und ihre Propagandaabteilungen grundsätzlich keine Vorstellung von Geschichte haben und nur dann so tun, als hätten sie eine, wenn sie ihr eigenes Verschwinden im Zuge geschichtlicher Umwälzungen fürchten«. Wer war also Bismarck?

Based on relevant literature, this seminar paper is devoted to the history of the Gotha Kunstkammer at Friedenstein Palace, which existed from the end of the 17th century until the 19th century. Focus and at the same time structure of the investigation are the dukes from the house Saxony-Gotha and later Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg and their explicit work for the Kunstkammer and its holdings: Where were purchases made? Which new collections were founded? Which parts of the collection received more attention?

Colonial governments radically transformed the built environment of the territories they ruled. This encompassed the planning of towns and cities, the creation of transportation systems, the introduction of new architectural forms, and, in some cases, the reintroduction or reinforcement of existing or past forms indigenous to the cultures being colonized. Spatial and architectural politics accompanied European imperialism from the start but intensified with the industrial revolutions of the 19th century and the increasing use of expert knowledge in colonial rule during the 20th century. Spatial and architectural strategies provide insight into official colonial thought, lines of internal conflict among colonizers within colonial state fields, and sites and forms of resistance to foreign domination. This paper examines one case study of architectural and spatial politics: German Samoa. The German approach to colonialism in Samoa was dominated by a program of attempted cultural “salvage” or retraditionalization: preserving or even reconstituting many traditional ways of life, while eliminating others and easing Samoans slowly into capitalist modernity. This was reflected in the colonial built environment. The building in which Samoans deliberated over the aspects of government delegated to them by the colonial state was designed by the German building overseer used traditional styles and materials. German government buildings used reinforced concrete and European houses and commercial structures were made of wood and had verandas. Other buildings such as the mixed hospital in Apia and the government school for the sons of Samoan elites blended European and local traditions.

The phrase “German by passport, Russian by heart” summarizes, but at the same time simplifies the complex artistic legacy of Georg Schlicht. Schlicht was born into a family of Volga Germans, brought up in Saratov and educated in Moscow, but was forced to leave Russia in the aftermath of the 1917 upheavals. His creativity reflects the ideological twists and turns of his lifetime and his legacy mirrors his belonging, in the sense of his whereabouts in Germany, the land of his fathers, and the longing for his spiritual home in Tsarist Russia, a country that had ceased to exist. The aesthetic dichotomy of his oeuvre is the theme of this volume, in which an international team of researchers from Britain, Germany, Russia, Belarus and the Netherlands have undertaken, for the first time, to chart and illuminate the various stations of Schlicht’s life and art – an existence that swayed between his Russian motherland and his German fatherland. Kaspar Hauser had been vaccinated.
A detailed medical observation debunks the legend of captivity without any contact with humans. Main text Kaspar Hauser (1812?-1833), the most mysterious figure of the 19th century, was vaccinated against smallpox at some point in his youth, according to the famous Binder Decree (1828). According to the regulations in Bavaria, Kaspar Hauser therefore had to have been presented to a vaccinator at some point in his youth. This seriously calls into question the legendary tale that he never encountered people until his appearance in Nuremberg on 26 May 1828. While the story of his imprisonment has been called into question not only from the point of view of psychology and has been definitively refuted with the inoculation scar, his origins remain mysterious; a descent from the noble house of Baden cannot be ruled out.

Jahrhunderts wurde gemäß dem berühmten Binder-Erlass (1828) irgendwann in seiner Jugend gegen Pocken geimpft. Gemäß den Regularien in Bayern musste Kaspar Hauser daher zwingend irgendwann in seiner Jugend einem Impfarzt vorgeführt worden sein. Dies stellt die legendenhafte Erzählung, er sei bis zu seinem Auftauchen in Nürnberg 26. Mai 1828 nie Menschen begegnet, ernsthaft in Frage. Während die Geschichte der Gefangenschaft nicht nur aus Sicht der Psychologie in Frage gestellt wurde und mit der Impfnarbe endgültig widerlegt ist, bleibt seine Herkunft weiterhin geheimnisvoll, eine Abstammung aus dem Adelshaus von Baden kann nicht ausgeschlossen werden.

Resumo: O presente artigo pretende discutir o significado filosófico do conceito nietzschiano da morte de Deus como um acontecimento histórico incontornável. Para tanto, parte da análise do conhecido aforismo 125 de A Gaia Ciência, discutindo detidamente diversas formulações que explicitam o papel ocupado por "Deus" na filosofia nietzschiana e, para além disso, o significado sua morte. Nessa descrição vem à tona a relação da morte de Deus e da experiência do niilismo, enquanto desvalorização de todos os valores e supressão da própria possibilidade da verdade. During the High Imperialism era, it was not unusual that Nordic Europeans took up colonial positions in African colonies. Given the high number of Swedish citizens in the Congo Free State, this paper analyses the written and visual ego-documents of those who worked there as missionaries, soldiers, steamboat captains or traders. The presented sources include diary entries, letters and a photograph. The goal is to establish to which extent Swedish men in particular tried to maintain or adjust their status as white men and how they engaged with being part of an inherently racist colonial system that encouraged notions of white supremacy. Some questions to be addressed are to which extent ego-documents and a micro-historical approach help analyse how Swedish colonisers understood their roles and identities as representatives of white culture and how they communicated those to themselves and other audiences. To which lengths did these men go to practice whiteness when in the Congo Free State and when did so-called contact zones lead to acculturation and acceptance of local habits? How important was the sense of a white identity to them? To this purpose, a set of tools is presented that includes the analysis of private documents in combination with micro-history, whiteness and masculinity studies. Ultimately, a selection of transimperial agents and their sources shows how whiteness was more important than citizenship and how features of masculinity engaged with the former.

Nietzsche's writings have consistently perplexed both scholars and average readers alike. Many academics who pride themselves as 'Nietzche scholars' have difficulty delineating which discipline Nietzche should be considered a part of. One popular affirmation is defining him as a cultural critic and a philosopher of culture. Nonetheless, few, if any, have attempted to relate his concepts of culture, power, society, and humanity to the field of anthropology. In this paper, I attempt to explore to what extent Nietzsche influenced, overtly or covertly, the anthropological disciplines. I will begin by contending that he can easily be placed within the discourse of 19th-century anthropologists; who are considered the founders of the field. He shared methodological and philosophical considerations with prominent anthropologists, such as Franz Boas, while simultaneously inspiring some of the more unsavory characters from anthropological history. He even can stand out among his anthropological contemporaries by accomplishing what no anthropologist has ever been able to do: making Europe the subject of cultural anthropological research. With this understanding in mind, I will go on and explain what a 'Nietzschean anthropology' would consist of. His opinions on linguistic, cultural, biological, and archaeological anthropology not only mimic modern 21st-century anthropological ideals but can also be interpreted as oddly predictive of them. All in all, Nietzche's anthropological views (just like his views on psychology, philosophy, literature, and art) were vastly ahead of their time. I will conclude with my belief that Nietzche can be considered one of the most prominent anthropologists in history.

We have explored the 19 th-century mystery of the identity of Kaspar Hauser, the so-called Child of Europe, from the perspective of the smallpox vaccination. We have highlighted the improbability that he was secretly inoculated based on the vaccination policies and methodologies applied at the time. This consideration allows for a reflection on the whole case and the importance of vaccination scars in ascertaining immunization against one of humanity's deadliest killers, especially given the recent monkeypox outbreak.

Heinrich Graetz (1817–1891), the famous historian and biblical exegete, penned his commentary to the Song of Songs in 1871 to counter rising antisemitism fueled by racialized fantasies of Jewish gender and sexuality. Graetz contested antisemitic tropes of Jewish masculinity and femininity by reconfiguring the Song of Songs, this most blatantly erotic book of scripture, as a testament to and celebration of Jewish chastity. Against the lascivious femme fatal, Graetz introduced the tender Sulamit, whose paradigmatic chastity renders romantic ardor into asexual, sisterly affection. In contrast to the effeminate Jew, Graetz introduced the Friend, a brawny adventurer whose masculine attempt at chastity only reveals his sexual potency. Graetz leverages the co-constitutive relationships among gender, class, and race to bestow on these figures not only the bourgeois virtues connoted by their chastity, but also associations of whiteness and middle-class belonging. Graetz’s exegetical construction of new models of Jewish femininity and masculinity was no mere theoretical exercise, but a response to matters of life and death as the rise of sexually transmitted diseases coalesced into a public health crisis. With the specter of syphilis in the background, Graetz’s commentary to the Song of Songs proffered German Jews—and German Christians—a Semitic path to redemption from the immorality crippling fin-de-siècle Germany.

American business history emerged from the 1980s thoroughly permeated by the "new institutional economics," most would agree. But what has not been sufficiently appreciated is the extent to which business historians who focus on institutions must become political historians as well [17]. For institutions are inherently political entities. According to conventional wisdom, they consist of rules, compliance procedures, and norms that order relationships among individuals [10, 25, 39, 49]. In doing so, institutions necessarily spell out a distribution of power, and in that sense they must be considered political. Die Geschichte des Verhältnisses zwischen dem katholischen Christentum und der Demokratie in Polen in den letzten Jahren ist eine Geschichte der fortschreitenden Katastrophe. In einer Zeit der politischen Radikalisierung, die sich seit 2015 vollzieht – des Sieges der rechtspopulistischen Koalition ist es äußerst schwierig zwei gleichermaßen widersprüchliche Begriffe zu finden. Der politische Prozess der Konterrevolution soll eine Antwort auf die „liberale Revolution“ sein, die auf den Zusammenbruch des Kommunismus folgte. In diesem Essay beschreibe ich welche Folgen hat diese Radikalisierung für die polnische religiöse Welt.

Das 1844 in Wertheim veranstaltete Gesangfest kann als Vorläufer des ersten gesamtdeutschen Festes in Würzburg (1845) gelten. Diese Lesart wurde in Würzburg deutlich formuliert: Während des Festes wurde der in Wertheim geborenen Idee und deren Rückführung auf den Erbprinzen Adolph von Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg (1805-1861) gedacht, die nachfolgend publizierten Festbeschreibungen hielten dies fest. Von diesen Hinweisen ausgehend stellt der Beitrag auf der Basis bislang nicht beachteter Archivalien aus dem Bestand der Wertheimer "Liedertafel" und der Besprechung des Festes in der zeitgenössischen Publizistik Vorbedingungen, Organisation, Ablauf und musikalisches Repertoire dar, Formen einer Erinnerungskultur werden benannt, sowie mit Erbprinz Adolph, dem Wertheimer Kantor Philipp Lambinus und der Wertheimer Liedertafel die Hauptakteure vorgestellt. Das im Rahmen der Recherche wiederaufgefundene "Gedenkbuch" erlaubt eine statistische Auswertung der Teilnehmerzahlen, Aussagen zum Einzugsbereich und der sozialen Verankerung der Teilnehmer. Die darin eingetragenen Gedenksprüche weisen ebenso wie Teile d es musikalischen Repertoires oder die Inszenierung einer Wanderung zur Burgruine auf den (gesamt-)nationalen Charakter dieses Gesangfestes hin. Im Rahmen der Darstellung wird auch die Wertheimer Musikgeschichte näher beleuchtet, z.B. die Ablösung des "Gesangverein" durch die "Liedertafel" (1839/40) und das Wirken des Kantors Lambinus.

This master thesis build upon an earlier published article in the Heine Jahrbuch (Zwischen Europa und „Nazionalkatzenjammer“ - Zur jüdischen, europäischen und weltweiten Emanzipation bei Heinrich Heine, 2020). For Heine, the concept of Europe was an omnipresent element of his life, work, hopes and thoughts. This article will outline some of his ideas on the themes Europe, Judaism and emancipation. In doing so, Heine's thought will be placed in the broader context of the long nineteenth century. The dualism between Judaism as a religion vis-à-vis the Christian majority and the Jewish nation vis-à-vis the emerging nation states will be discussed in detail.

Diese Masterarbeit baut auf den zuvor im Heine Jahrbuch publizierten Artikel "Zwischen Europa und „Nazionalkatzenjammer“ - Zur jüdischen, europäischen und weltweiten Emanzipation bei Heinrich Heine" (2020). Das Konzept Europa war für Heine ein omnipräsentes Element seines Lebens, Schaffens, Hoffens und Denkens. In diesem Artikel sollen einige seiner Ideen über die Themen Europa, das Judentum und die Emanzipation skizziert werden. Dabei wird das Gedankengut von Heine in den breiteren Kontext des langen neunzehnten Jahrhunderts eingeordnet.

Positing the occurrence of a “Confessional Revival“ in the 19th century presumes that there had been a loss of attention to confessions. Such was certainly the case in the Lutheran churches of the 19th century. The revival of interest in the documents of the Book of Concord was not universal, and was not met without criticism.

This conference looks back at two theologians, Andreas Rudelbach and Theodosius Harnack, who argued in favor of renewed attention to the Lutheran Confessions. We have commissioned translations of their writings, so that a new discussion about the role of the Confessions can occur, resting on a broader foundation than previously available to the English-speaking theologian.

Translations will be distributed to registered participants in advance of the conference (around April 1), and the “workshop” time will be dedicated to group study of these “new” texts.
